The OJ Simpson joke got a smile out of me in the first trailer, but this just looks painful
This is the second time Akiva Schaffer is stepping away from his Lonely Island / Andy Samberg comfort. The other time, he got extremely unlucky with Neighborhood Watch being made and then the Trayvon Martin shooting happening. That affected everyone's perception of that movie.
Him directing will be interesting and it's clear his influence is all over this. I think this will be a hit with millennials that like the Lonely Island, I'm unsure of mainstream appeal. Samberg was able to pivot from "**** in my pants" jokes. Schaffer might not.

I wanna go ahead and preshit on Spinal Tap II, too, although it will likely have some funny lines in it.
I hate to say it, but I actually laughed at a couple of the gags in that trailer. The one I saw before looked shitttt-tay.
I'm also rooting for it to fail a little after hearing a David Zucker interview about how the movie studio screwed the brothers, trashed their original script for this movie, and sold the rights to Seth MacFarlane. 17 em. Who else besides the Zuckers can write a perfect script like this:
Frank: Nordberg, it's me, Frank. Now, who did this to you?
Nordberg: [Struggling to tell the name of the ship he was attacked on] I... Love... You.
Frank: [Awkwardly] I... love you, too, Nordberg. Who were they?
Nordberg: [half-consciously] Ship... boat.
Frank: That's right, Nordberg. A boat. Now, when you're better, we'll go sailing together on a boat. We'll take a cruise just like last year.
Nordberg: [half-consciously] No... Drugs...
Frank: Hey, Nurse! Quick! Give this man some drugs! Quick! Can't you see he's in pain? Give him a shot quickly!
[nurse administers drugs]
Nordberg: No... no...
[pulls Frank towards him]
Nordberg: [half-consciously] Heroin... Heroin, Frank!
Frank: Uh, Nordberg... that's a pretty tall order. You're gonna have to give me a couple of days on that one.

To be fair, the Zuckers had cast Ed Helms as Drebin. Nobody wanted to see that crap. That guy already killed one classic reboot (Vacation).
I held that movie on its own. It's not vacation. However....pulling into Memphis in time for the mom to live up to her sorority reputation made me cry, I laughed so hard. My wife sees that scene and knows that's how I will view her if we ever go to a reunion for her.
It definitely had its funny moments. Some really funny moments. I just don't think Ed Helms is particularly funny.
Oh hell.. what is the friken appeal of Ed Helms. They have tried their absolute best to reignite the original Hangover following with movies that makes Adam Sandler’s work look like Francis Ford Coppola.
No idea if this'll be good, but what made Leslie Nielsen so great in those comedies was that he didn't come from comedy and he played it straight instead of going for the laughs. Him playing it straight and letting the writing get the laughs is what worked.
I could see Liam Neeson being very good if the writing is good and he just does Liam Neeson.

Yes, this is why I think it has a chance. Those original movies were great for the reasons you say....you had a traditionally serious actor playing a ridiculous role in a completely serious way. This is why I thought Neeson was perfect because he'd be doing the same thing. He was great in similar appearances in other McFarlane films like Ted and A Million Ways To Die In The West.
I'm not looking forward to it, because I expect cringey-ness. But Neeson's dry humor was funny up against Gervais in Life's Too Short as well.
It's hilarious to me that Leslie Nielsen was legendary in Hollywood for taking a fart machine basically everywhere with him...
