I forgot how terrible we were at closing out games
Yeah we lucked out when he said he was too good for us. Illinois has regressed in his time there. As one of those guys who intitally wanted Groce to be our coach 4 years ago, this one is sweet.

(although we played possibly the 3 worst teams) and build a little confidence.

Same. He didn't even entertain the call for the job back in 2012...
Watson is becoming a beast.
The mental aspect of the game is really what hurts in the final minutes when trying to hang on to win. When they were up by 14 with about 9 to go you could see them getting confused and making mistakes. Do have some young guys which in time will get better at this part. Not sure if the mental part is coaching or players.
Nice to get a 3rd in a row (although we played possibly the 3 worst teams) and build a little confidence.
Hey, I'll take it! For a while there I thought we might have been one of the three worst teams. The mental aspect of the game is really what hurts in the final minutes when trying to hang on to win. Way to come in and try to piss on everything. If you don't see any improvement from the team in the last three games, I feel sorry for you.21-33 overall and 1-14 conference is the combined record of the 3 teams we beat. There average RPI is 182 which is better than ours at 196. I guess if that makes you or the team confident and/or hopeful then we have a long way to go to be relevant in college basketball.
No question, we have a long way to go but there's also no question that this team is young and improving. Nobody is expecting a tournament appearance this year but the future looks bright to me with continued player development.21-33 overall and 1-14 conference is the combined record of the 3 teams we beat. Illinois just beat Purdue by 14 - it is never easy to win on the road in the Big Ten.
There has been noticeable improvement from many players lately, especially Watson, Webster, and Morrow. Since conference play started, we are 2nd in the Big Ten in scoring and 1st in field goal percentage. So there is reason for optimism. We seem to have a legit Big Ten PG for the next 4 years, which is a huge piece of the puzzle in terms of building the foundation for the future.
You said actually like I didn't see those games. I saw them both. My opinion that you refuted was that the second 10 minutes of the first half was the best I'd seen all year. If you want to disagree with it that's fine. I'm not here to argue with you.

Gotta be .500 and if I had to wager I would wager that is not going to happen. If they can find some defense, then possibly.Do we make the NIT this year if we lose our next 3?
And that is one of the reason's Iowa is so good because of Gessle. They have improved every year since he was a Freshman.
Yep, Iowa's big recruiting class 4 years ago all stayed together, and they are now reaping the rewards. If our freshmen class can stay together and improve every year, we could see similar results in 2-3 years. Watson-Morrow-Jacobson are every bit as good as Gesell-Uthoff-Woodbury were as freshmen, maybe better.
Remember, this was originally going to be our "big year" with a lineup of Petteway, Shields, Pitchford, White, and Webster. Unfortunately, it didn't work out that way, and Miles had to hit the reset button. IMO he deserves the chance to build this program around Watson and Morrow the next few years, as they are the most talented high school recruits this program has landed in a long time.
I believe Uthoff came in after transferring from Wisconsin, he didn't come in with ( Gesell thanks for correcting me) and Woodbury.Uthoff is the best player on Iowa team and will be all- Big 10.
I don't think we're out of the woods quite yet. We're still going to struggle against longer, bigger teams. BUT this team is really starting to gain confidence and play consistent basketball on both ends. I'm excited for the future, and I can't wait to watch these guys grow because if we can stay together, who knows how good they can be.3 games ago people claimed Miles couldn't cut it and we were best off firing him. Now those people are quiet (or quietly hoping for more losses).
I'll say it again, Miles is a proven winner and this is the best influx of talent I've witnessed since Danny Nee.
Get on the train now so you don't have to be one of those guys later who have to say "yeah and I wanted him fired". It will only show how limited your hoops knowledge is.
Illinois jacking it up from 3 on 70 percent of their shots really helped. If you want to see a somewhat surprising stat, look at our rebounding stats. Before the game today our guys were outrebounding teams by half a dozen a game.I don't think we're out of the woods quite yet. We're still going to struggle against longer, bigger teams. Big Ed threw that ball down today! Jumped outta my chair and scared the dog!
I think a 6-6 finish the rest of the way is very plausible.. At 17-14 and 9-9 in the Big Ten, I think Nebraska earns an NIT trip. Going into yesterday, I felt the Illinois game was a must win if Nebraska wanted an NIT bid. They pulled it off and there is a real shot.Gotta be .500 and if I had to wager I would wager that is not going to happen. If they can find some defense, then possibly.
