There was a similar bill in Alabama too, but I don't know if it passed or not. Hopefully it did so we'll have a lot fewer criminals because I know several who do it. Even Obama does in DC ... and when asked if it was legal, he said "I don't know ....".

If you think about it, what's wrong with having your own distillery as long as you don't sell the stuff? Must be the lost taxes ....

I think it's just good ol' fashioned resistance to change.

There could be a small amount of taxes lost by folks brewing their own stuff for personal consumption, but if home brewing is legalized, home brewer stores will inevitably set up shop in the State. The barely, hops, equipment, etc. they sale would generate sales tax revenue (I think?) and the new industry of selling home brewing products would create a few jobs.

I have been brewing for 13+ years here in Virginia. We had a group, Colonial Ale Smiths & Keggers (CASK) that got together at a local microbrewery and sampled each others beer. It is a great inexpensive hobby. Have an IPA that should be ready in a couple of weeks.

There was a Supreme Court case a while back where a woman with cancer was growing her own pot for her own use in California and there was no mention of it being illegal, but her growing her own marijuanna affected taxes somehow. Someone else who took Whit for constitutional powers and was listening can probably go further in detail.

I can't stand Bryant, but if he's done anything (or the legislature for that matter) during his term it's make Mississippi's ridiculous alcohol policies less ridiculous. They're still ridiculous.

It's impossible to make beer or buy it in most places but we're the only state where we don't have a law against open containers in cars.

Not just taxation but also transporting homebrew and allowing open tastings & competitions.
