What are 'alternative facts '? I have been searching all day for a succinct answer to no avail...Google, it's just a bunch of opinion. Encyclopedia Britannica has nothing? Websters...nothing? Does anyone have a definition? Even an opinion? Take a stab at what they are, if you feel up to it...I feel an explanation is warranted today.

Much appreciated.

I'm guessing they mean facts that aren't considered facts by the crooked media and so are therefore actually facts because they are alternative to the crooked facts that are actually facts but used as not facts but as crooked facts so therefore the non crooked facts are alternative facts in that they are facts but not really facts but because they are not crooked facts they are alternative facts so then they are facts because they are not crooked.

I won't be of much help because I acknowledge that I am a biased conservative. But here goes. The media is very, very distrusted in the U.S. They have been caught in lie after lie. Not just during this campaign but for many years now. They have an agenda, and conservatives strongly feel it is a liberal one. Studies showed that 91% of Trump's media coverage during the general election against Hillary was negative. A startling figure.

So, when the media claims facts, Trump counters with "alternative facts." The media claimed the mall was half empty and Trump counters with alternative facts meant to counter the liberal media line.

Just yesterday, a liberal pool reporter tweeted that the MLK bust had been removed by Trump from the Oval Office. Pictures then appear showing the bust still in place. The offending pool reporter retracts his tweet but the damage is done. Conservatives believe, rightly in my opinion, that a liberal President would never have been accused of this in the first place.

So media "facts" are now countered with "alternative facts."

I was joking with my answer, but Paxx just said the same thing I think

To everyone who isn't Biff, it's simply a lie. Here's an example, "when the WTC came down, hundreds of Muslims were celebrating in the streets" is an alternative fact.

Actually, there were Muslims celebrating on the roof tops in Jersey. It is on video by a local news station. He exaggerated the numbers of those celebrating. I think he said thousands and it was in the low hundreds.

Hmmm....ok...I give you an A for effort...seriously...but it still doesn't answer the question what are alternative facts? Would you admit this was a downright silly play on her/ the administration's part? Almost every source of media biased or not is roasting this today. Whether or not this was some sort of oddball play on their part doesn't matter imo...The President of the United States should know better than to get into semantics like this. Nevermind tweeting like a buffoon about numbers and such/ sending out the press secretary to admonish the crowd... narcissistic behaviour to the extreme.

You're a far left guy so I understand you perspective. The media claimed reasonably low attendance. Trump countered that the mall was full and backed up to the Washington Monument. The media showed side by side pictures of Obama's crowd and Trump's. Trump's crowd in the mall was half empty. But the media did not tell us the time stamp of the photo. Later CNN photos of the mall showed the mall fairly full and backed up to the monument. The media also did not explain the extremely poor weather or the fact that demonstrators promised violence in the streets. I am not suggesting that Trump had as many on the mall as Obama, but the media distorted the facts.

Trump is not going to let them get away with than kind of nonsense any longer. When the reporter lied about the MLK bust, Trump responded. It is Trump's way of countering a corrupt media.

If you are contributing my country's historical perspective as 'far left' of yours I am not sure I agree...left yes...far left no. But that is another discussion entirely. I float here between whatever party suits my values, as I find they do change (the parties), like the wind to suit their narritive...as it seems they do in the US and frankly everywhere. Yet still...why are we debating the crowds? Media driven yes...Trump driven yes....let's all paint the picture and look at it as though it's art, when in reality it's a cluster ****....as I say this alternative facts nonsense is one for the ages...

I'm just really getting frustrated at the credibility argument on both sides. It's a problem.

In my opinion alternative facts is another term for spin, something we witness everyday on this board and have witnessed for most of our lives from the media and politicians.

For example, every time a bill is passed there is spin from the left and the right. Usually the truth is somewhere in between. The media for years has seemingly taken the left side of arguments.

During those time, men like George W Bush and Mitt Romney didn't fight back much. Example: Candy Crowley interjecting herself into fact checking at one of the 2012 debates. Here comes Trump who calls the media out when they do the same thing and conservatives love it. They wish Romney and others would have done the same.

I should have been more clear. My interpretation of your posts is that you are far left. In Canada, you may be center or slightly left of center as I believe you are correct in that Canada is to the left of America. I have many friends in Western Canada that seem to be more conservative. Trudeau seems very far left to me, just like his father.

So how bout they try this...' Thank you for the question but we are not interested in numbers, photographs or anything else along those lines today. We are here to discuss our policy initiatives and will do our best to answer any questions you may have'....nope...instead we will brow beat the lot of you about how biased you are....and invent a term 'alternative facts'. How ridiculous is this becoming?

Sometimes you have to be nice and other times stern. The guys I mentioned above like Bush and Romney always took the approach you suggested. It didn't work. Trump is doing what many of Americans want him to do.

The media should be completely unbiased. It is bad for the nation when they are biased. I am conservative on most issues but I don't want a media that is biased to the right.

How about we try this. We look around the Oval Office before proclaiming to the world that MLK's bust was removed (by the very racist Trump)? How about we ask about tax policy, repatriation policy, any policy rather than badgering the President elect to let them ask a question (CNN). That badgering would never have happened under Obama. Every President deserves respect. And we don't let 91% of our election coverage be negative toward only one candidate.

The media is losing this battle. And this will continue until they regain the trust of the American people.

I loved Trudeaus father for the most part...not on everything! He did have balls of steel, his son ...well we shall see. I empathize with Westerners the same as I do for those out East. The goal is a united front. To be truthful I usually vote Conservative provincial and Liberal federal. I find the international Lib policy suits my values, and I also believe in the social programs offered (so long as run properly), I was in full support of sending troops to Afghanistan, and deeply thank them from their service, yet against sending to Iraq . In both cases that is exactly what happened. The provincial Liberals in Ontario are crooks...and I mean serious crooks! The good news is Keystone will be approved soon and that will create a good relationship hopefully.

The media was never unbiased. It will never be unbiased. It used to be more balance. Many towns had a Democrat newspaper and a Republican newspaper. Local news used to have a conservative commentator and a liberal commentator.

However, the liberal won academia. Schools of journalism went hard left. So that became the flow of media.

I absolutely love Canada and hope we maintain great relations. I was engaged in Toronto at the CN tower (my future wife could not stand heights, lol). I actually had a client in Toronto for several years and spent 2-3 days a week there. Love the city. My favorite is Vancouver. Great city. So clean. Homelessness and vagrancy has become a big problem. I took my new wife there about a year ago. I also had a client there and spent a couple of years there as well. Very cosmopolitan. Back then, we could smoke cuban cigars on terraces overlooking the streets. Wonderful times. I first saw the Phantom of the Opera in Toronto at the Pantages Theatre. What a performance.

Keystone will be approved and pretty quickly. It was simply insane to deny the permit. All politics.

The best way to manage is to check and verify media and politician's claims, regardless of the source. If the mainstream media says "a", and some other media form says "b", don't assume either "a" or "b" is correct. There is often enough evidence that you can draw your own conclusions.

It's hard for me to understand how people just accept the conclusion that their political party or preferred media outlet take. That's the equivalent of signing over your brain.

When trying to detect bias it's pretty important to understand the difference between an editorial and what is (allegedly) straight news. I'd guess that 80% of the "straight news" I see on Fox and CNN would have earned a failing grade in my high school journalism classes because of the clear bias used in language, tone, and framing the context.

We've seen more claims of fake news in the last week than I can ever remember. Some of them were very clearly justified. Some of them very clearly weren't. Take the points one at a time and make your own choice. People that can't do that really don't have much to offer.

I was perhaps at the same performance of Phantom years ago lol...it was great! Agree on Vancouver being beautiful however deeply troubled in the Gastown district etc, this as I am sure you know is the true home of the far left. The East Coast (particularly Newfoundland...witness my dog of choice in the avatar lol) has my heart. They built this country imo and are now left to flounder many of them. I visit out there once a year to immerse myself in the countryside and the people....still somewhat left but not like the whackos in BC.
Funny story...I was about to deposit some change in a street meter to park in PEI while visiting and a young lad rushes up and says...'sir wait! You don't have to pay today! It's Saturday, it's free!' No joke lol...
Thank you for the kind words btw.

Also... many of the people out East here are not too far off from those in encounter frequently in WV. Hard working, not looking for a hand out but looking for a chance to live a better life....an opportunity.

Indeed...the ones that either don't take the time to evaluate, or really simply can't be bothered, is what I worry about. And something tells me this is the majority worldwide. ....I heard a good quote once and can't remember who said it...'if you are not outraged , then you are not paying attention ' this can be attributed to both sides of the aisle imo.

As I said, I took my wife to Vancouver. She is OCD but Vancouver instantly became her favorite city. She loved the views but most of all the cleanliness. She naturally loved the shopping and the food, incredible. We drove north to Whistler, what scenery. Went to Vancouver Island and toured around. One of her favorite trips.

I loved the Island! Magnificent! Had both a cabin in the rainforest and one on the beach near Tofino for 4 nights each...and it looks like we have more in common my lovely wife has the same situation as yours OCD. It is turning out to be pretty debilitating for her from a day to day perspective. And I will selfishly say for myself...but I deal, and always will deal, she means everything to me...well the dog too lol, but you get my drift. I am consistently encouraging her to want /get a specialist opinion. You know the drill I am sure in terms of day to day. Tapping the feet dozens of times before she comes in the door or something bad will happen, I check every time we leave the house that the iron is unplugged. Unplugging the appliances right after their use, getting on an airplane is harder and harder year over year for her...I am so used to it now I am almost oblivious which really is not healthy. Any hints on how to affect some change are much appreciated. If she can manage it even a bit more effectively it would make a world of difference!

He was right on the celebrating, wrong about the numbers. He said thousands and likely there were hundreds although no one is absolutely certain. They were celebrating on roof tops in tail gate type parties. Still very, very disgusting.

At least you have a dog. No one she would ever permit one in our house. She is actually not as affected as your wife. She is a clean freak. When she fills the gas tank, the numbers on the pump must be an even dollar. Stuff like that. But when I say clean, I mean really, really clean. LOL.

The Media doesn't recognize facts. Since they "lie with the Truth" facts are to be sifted, shifted, twisted, or re arranged in order to support an agenda...(ie: America is a racist, sexist, homophobic, Religiously intolerant, White male dominated Christian KKK Capitalist economy that is unfair, illegal, & illegitimate along with a complete lie designed to protect a White male hierarchy and oppress Women and minorities)

That's their 'fact', and anything that happens must be shaped into 'alternative facts' that they then promote as Truth which is designed to support or confirm that agenda. "Lying with the Truth"

Things happen, but if they don't support that agenda or don't fit it, they then make up their own set of facts to support it and then make you think that agenda is the real Truth.

Nothing else is allowed to compete with their "agenda". Thus "alternative facts".
