Total Defense

#1 Alabama
#2 LSU
#4 South Carolina
#5 Georgia
#10 Florida
#19 Vanderbilt
#28 Tennessee
#42 Mississippi State
#51 Arkansas
#59 Kentucky
#78 Auburn

#107 Oklahoma State

The #1 Offense (Houston) got smacked today at HOME by a decent defense (USM)

Most any SEC team would SMOKE OSU.

Defense wins championships. Offense is for show.

It's great. It's a mathematical analysis of sports conventional wisdom, like the aforementioned "<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Tahoma, Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255); ">Defense wins championships. Offense is for show.</span>"<div>
</div><div>Sure enough, there is no statistical evidence that having a great defense is more important than having a great offense. In the NFL and college, championship teams have the same (very high) average rank of offense and defense, and it's split about 50-50 on which is higher. Yet another oft-touted phrase shown to be statistically untrue.</div><div>
</div><div>The more you know...</div>

Whenever they play OOC teams they put up big numbers on offense as well. I now they put up 40+ on Oregon and I think WV. Don't just focus on LSU's defense. They can score. Usually they dominate second halves after their depth has taken it's toll and their O-line can walk through the opposition.

Here is the defensive ranking of the teams on OSU's schedule

14. Texas
61. Mizzou
62. Oklahoma
66. Tx A&M
72 LA Lafayette
74. KState
90. Tulsa
99. Iowa State
110. Arizona
114. Baylor
115 Texas Tech
120 Kansas

4 of the 12 teams they faced are among the 10 WORST defenses in FBS football. Iowa State, who beat them, is the 21st worst. They faced precisely ONE team with a defense ranked in the top half of college football. Based on this list, OSU's #3 ranked offense isn't really that impressive.

<div id="aeaoofnhgocdbnbeljkmbjdmhbcokfdb-mousedown">You still have to put together an above average offense to win it all in college football, but having an excellent defense seems to be essential.</div><div>
</div>Looking at the last few champions:<div>2010 Auburn - #7 offense, #60 defense</div><div>2009 Alabama - #42 offense, #2 defense</div><div>2008 Florida - #15 offense, #9 defense</div><div>2007 LSU - #26 offense, #3 defense</div><div>2006 Florida - #19 offense, #6 defense</div><div>2005 Texas - #3 offense, #10 defense</div><div>2004 USC - #12 offense, #6 defense</div><div>2003 LSU - #31 offense, #1 defense</div><div>2002 tOSU - #70 offense, #23 defense (the most outstanding example of how looking at unit rankings will not help you find the 14-0 team of that year)</div><div>2001 Miami - #8 offense, #6 defense</div>

That book is for people who dont understand that there is a difference in the NFL and College. NFL runs the same offenses and defenses.

And, more importantly, the people who cannot fathom that NO team with a suspect defense ever wins any national titles.

Plenty of teams with average or pedestrian offense do. But defenses can score.

Offenses only contribution to the other side of the ball is to hold it for long periods which actually is opposite of it's mission which is to score on every play.
