What's the history of all these WSC rivalry trophies? The Hinsdales have one, the Downers have one. Then there's the Hinsdales v Downers ones.

Do these towns really beef like that?

The Oaken Bucket goes back to the mid 30s when there was just one Hinsdale and one Downers Grove high school. From what I understand it was made by shop students at Hinsdale.

In the first sixteen years of its existence, Downers Grove controlled the series, winning ten of the sixteen games and tying two. Then in 1951, the Red Devils controlled the Bucket for twenty consecutive years (1951 to 1970). In over a half century of competition, the series now stands at Hinsdale 51 wins, Downers 31 wins and 3 games have ended in ties. Twenty-eight games have been decided by a touchdown or less.

Considering the closeness of the communities and the fact that both schools were charter members of the West Suburban Conference, this has been a great rivalry.

The Rebel Cannon, which of course is a miniature replica cannon, was created I believe by a shop teacher at Hinsdale South back in the mid 60s as both schools opened about the same time. Both schools were charter members of the Des Plaines Valley League which is now the West Suburban Gold Conference and have played for this since 1966. I'm not sure of teh series record. When I played in the old DPVL, Hinsdale South was a very good program and DGS was not that strong so the Hornets dominated for a time, then the Mustangs grew and got strong and they dominated..In recent seasons it's gone back and forth...All friendly competition though...

Isn't there a traveling trophy between the Hinsdales and one between the Downers?

From a 2016 article:
It all began 100 years ago on the football field in East St. Louis. The East St. Louis Flyers triumphed, 35-0, and a tradition was born.On Friday at Clyde Jordan Stadium in East St. Louis, the rivalry between East St. Louis and Belleville West continues. One of the most cherished possessions in all of metro east high school sports — the Alton Southern Bell — will be up for grabs when the Flyers and the Maroons meet.

Breese Central and Breese Mater Dei play for the Milk Jug ... and Althoff and Mater Dei play for the Holy Grail, a newer trophy.

Not to hijack this thread focused on the the Hinsdale/DGS rivalry........Back in the days of West Aurora in the Upstate 8, there was the century trophy introduced at the 100th game against East Aurora. That game was a huge deal in Aurora. A helicoptor flew in the game ball, local McDonalds held a burger eating competition between the sides of town. West Aurora lost the 100th meeting back in 1993. When West Aurora won the 101st meeting in 1994, a linebacker broke the top off the century trophy which had been painted as a EA player. I was the recipient of that broken off trophy piece after we won the 101st meeting. That might be one of my top 3 coveted pieces of high school and college football memorabilia, mostly because of the story which goes along with it.

I remember that West team that beat East with Ted Schroeder, Jeff Weisse, and Elvis Hernandez.
