Hinsdale South takes down Downers Grove South 32-27 and for the
third straight season, takes the Rebel Cannon..
The Oaken Bucket goes back to the mid 30s when there was just one Hinsdale and one Downers Grove high school. From what I understand it was made by shop students at Hinsdale. What's the history of all these WSC rivalry trophies? The Hinsdales have one, the Downers have one. Then there's the Hinsdales v Downers ones.
Do these towns really beef like that?
The Hinsdale schools play for the Doings Cup.Isn't there a traveling trophy between the Hinsdales and one between the Downers?
Central never wanted to play South when the Hornets were a power in the late 70s into the 80s. ...
I remember that West team that beat East with Ted Schroeder, Jeff Weisse, and Elvis Hernandez. Not to hijack this thread focused on the the Hinsdale/DGS rivalry........Back in the days of West Aurora in the Upstate 8, there was the century trophy introduced at the 100th game against East Aurora. That game was a huge deal in Aurora. A helicoptor flew in the game ball, local McDonalds held a burger eating competition between the sides of town. West Aurora lost the 100th meeting back in 1993. When West Aurora won the 101st meeting in 1994, a linebacker broke the top off the century trophy which had been painted as a EA player. I was the recipient of that broken off trophy piece after we won the 101st meeting. That might be one of my top 3 coveted pieces of high school and college football memorabilia, mostly because of the story which goes along with it.
