I just stumbled on the show. I did a double take when the girl said Starkville. S/b interesting.

I haven't watched the show, but what they did with The Beer Garden is great. Nice place to eat and drink.

It's the most underrated place in Starkville. It's great for young alumni. Food is good, atmosphere is good, crowds are manageable, good music, good drinks.

Its hard to beat.

My girlfriend and I came to town for a baseball game one weekend and stayed. We couldn't have been more impressed. Although the rooms are fairly small, they are very clean and nice.

We ate dinner one night at the beer garden. They had a special of filet mignon that night. It was excellent. All the sides were good and the appetizer was delicious too. I believe we ordered some type of egg roll or wonton.

I can't wait to book my next stay there.

I wish they would advertise the Beer Garden more. It's a great atmosphere, good food, but I think the problem is everyone forgets about it because they don't put their name out there.

It is a necessity for restaurants to advertise, especially in a place like Starkville. Three pigs just closed in Starkville, but they are a great example of what you are talking about. Their food was actually pretty good (I actually enjoyed going there more than I did Dooey or Petty's... their brisket was the best in the area, IMO), but most had any idea they even existed, much less what they served.

I will definitely be trying that restaurant... I've heard nothing but wonderful things. I hope they really hit the advertising hard because it will definitely pay off, I believe.

Good example of 3pigs, Drt.

In all honestly, they were my favorite BBQ joint in town, and it wasn't even close. Their biggest problem wasn't advertising though; it was their horrendous service. When I say horrendous, I don't mean rude, but 17'n slow. They were in desperate need of a consultant to show them how to expedite food orders. They literally did one ticket at a time. There was no such thing as having multiple orders going at once. It was 1 ticket, and once they finished that, they moved on to the next. It was bizarre. I swear to God, I even saw this: One time I was there, a guy in front of me ordered a burger. There were 3 people working at the time. My GF and I ordered right after him. We waited 30 minutes for our food, and we were 1 of 4 groups in the restaurant. We were watching closely. When they got to the guy's burger, all there of them all helped assemble it. Not ****. Literally: one person put down the bun; one person put down the patty; another put down the lettuce, etc. etc. It was hilarious.

That being said. The food was amazing. Which makes things really said, because they were a good manager away from having an amazing restaurant.

I was never crazy about three little pigs. I ate there a couple of times and decided that was it. To each their own, though. My favorite bbq place used to be Grumpy's when they were new. The months before they "closed for remodeling" the food became horrible and you could tell they were cutting back. The bbq sandwiches went from being on specialty buns to loaf bread, I ordered a side of onion rings and got 3. Three. Who thinks three onion rings is a side? I had heard rumors that half the wait staff was meth heads right before he had to close it down. Sure that had nothing to do with it - if true.

I had always

wondered, in the past, why they didn't utilize this area of the hotel. The potential was always there.

When I was in school, the downtown area was pretty big. However, Mugshots was a bar, then. Plus, there was Whiskey Blues and Big Daddy's was the bar in the Hotel Chester.

Now, it seems that Old Venice and whatever is what used to be Whiskey Blues (I think it's changed at least once) are the only downtown bars. The Cotton District seems to be where everything goes down, which sucks because all of those bars together can't be more than 200 square feet (it seems).

Downtown you have the Old Venice Bar, the Bar above restaurant Tyler and the Dawg House in the old State Theater has 5 bars in it. Also, Tyler is building a bar in their basement, kind of a speak easy that will have access through the alleyway off of Conner street. Is there not a bar in Mugshots, upstairs?

Mugshots closes at 10 now I believe. Maybe rockin till 11 on weekends now. Downtown was at it's biggest/best when State Theater reopened (08 maybe?). Mugshots, Whiskey Blues (now Zorbas), Old Venice, State Theater and Big Daddy's. Plenty of options.

It really is sad what happened to Mugshots. Haven't been to the one in Starkville in years, but the one in Jackson was OK at first, even though its original location in the old Poet's location was a dump. But now it's just a restaurant. WTF? Mugshots was a great bar at one time.

You can blame the great protectors of the SPD for that one

It was a good show. Funny thing is when Gordon first walked out into the garden I looked at my wife and said told her he saw something there to use and make money off of. It was really cool what he pulled off there and involved the owners in it as well.

I think you can

blame that on a (wise) business decision. There just wasn't any money in booze, compared to their food, allegedly.

Circa 2004 - 2006 that place was as great as any other bar in the SEC, come 9:00 PM.

Seen that side of Gordon.

Really enjoyable show. Did not seem like the typical crazy 'reality' tv and not what I was expecting. Wonder if it is like that every show or if it was just that the Hotel Chester owners were just too likable to do a show where he was an *** the whole time.

That's what I heard except that being a bar was too much of a hassle compared to the money it brought in. I'm also guessing it's a lot easier to franchise a restaurant with a bar than a bar with a restaurant.

Don't know about the other locations, but the religious views of the family that owned the one in Jackson played a big part in changing it to a restaurant.
