That's what I grew up on in the 1980's. I got waaaaay more excited for Big East basketball than SEC. Me and my daddy would watch all the time. I liked St. John's while he liked Syracuse (the 1986 Big East tourney championship was great), then one of my good friends liked Georgetown. Good times.
Thought I remembered it correctly but seems Big East BKB as much as anything helped make ESPN what it is today. One of their first deals cooked up with David Gavitt to get them past the odd "sporting events" as their only content as I recall.
The partnership between ESPN and the Big East defined modern college basketball, transforming a regional conference into a national power through heavy promotion, high-profile game times, and the iconic Big Monday package.
Watching UCLA last night in their blue uniforms is what I grew up on in the 70's. Lived in the DMV area when Lefty Driesell was marketing Maryland as the UCLA of the east, the Memphis State game (Walton 21 for 22, only miss a waved off dunk for slightly turning his wrists down NO DUNKING!), ND upset and made Adidas Superstars the shoe to wear!
Then came Magic/Bird, NCSU/Valvano and the expanded tournament coverage and I've been hooked on college BKB ever since.
