every team has what ifs...except for MSU baseball the past 3 years so its amazing to see just how close we are to actually being in contention to host:

The first game against Bama where we did everything humanly possible to lose, the Sunday game against Florida where we again did everything humanly possible to lose, and then not putting Reed in the Friday game against Ark.

That's 3 games that would be 3 more series wins---14-10.

Again, all teams can say these things, but we haven't been able to recently.

There haven't been many SEC games that we were not in. In SEC play this year, we have only lost 6 games by 3 runs or more. Through this same time last year, we had lost 12 SEC games by 3 runs or more. We haven't even lost that many SEC games total yet this year. Huge improvement because we are scoring more runs and getting better pitching.

Staying in games is how you steal those extratwo or threegames a yearthat can make the difference between making it to Hoover and missing the tournament. See the sunday Vandy game and friday Auburn game

We've had a couple of questionable in game decisions, but so far we've done enough to put ourselves in position to make it to Hoover, with an outside shot at winning the West. Good enough for me.

that has helped our pitching out, and it has also kept us in games. When you don't make ridiculous mistakes game after game, it really helps out a lot.

I do agree that the pitching is better as well. Especially the bullpen.

We have a pretty scrappy team and we have a decent pitching staff overall- you can win with that in the SEC.

What's exciting to me is that we are going to continue to add talent and develop our freshmen and sophomores. Hopefully, we will continue to see progress to the point where we are where Florida, Vanderbilt, and South Carolina are now.

should or shouldn't have done, fact is and I hate to say it but it's true "that's baseball".

What I like most of all is we are playing our baseball now, we are getting confidence which we haven't had in several years. I think we will go 3-3 over the next few weekends, not sure how everyone else will do but I wouldn't be surprised if 3 or 4 teams don't do the same in the west.

Btw, the west kicked some *** this past weekend, could be the SEC is better overall than most have been saying.

Fact is, we're 6-5 in SEC games decided by 1 or 2 runs. We could just as easily be 8-16 as we could be 14-10. Our record is about what we deserve right now, other than the screwing of not getting 3 games against Kentucky.

just pointing out how different this year's team is.

But Im also not saying we are close to restoring our tradition. Next year is setting up to be pretty tough. We will be trotting a LOT of position players out there that are either raw or not talented enough to play in the SEC.

posted. I'm just saying we can't look back at any wins or losses as the next game from here on out will be the most important. Even though it was only Tn we took care of business and our pitching gave us enough to win the games.

Also, I have been a hard *** about our seniors, but they are coming alive and we need them if we want to make some noise.

but if we're still putting people on the field that don't belong in the SEC, well that's a problem.

Outside of Frost (who we'd better not be trotting out there), who is not talented enough to play in the SEC?

who is going to catch? That would be my starting point. Who is going to play SS? Who is going to play 3B? If Norris moves to 3B who plays 1B?

Can Stark hit in this league?

I'd love to think everyone we have mentally penciled into those spots is SEC caliber but when filling 4/5 role of your infield and the DH, its probably not the case.

...very good.

I think it's a stretch to say that any of these guys aren't SEC caliber, especially when they haven't seen the field yet. Again, the only young guy that I have seen that is not SEC caliber is Sam Frost.

Todd's always ready to trot out a potential lineup. Todd?

It's also a frustrating thing to see the juco guys like Vickerson and Shepherd just now coming around, in the second half of their second year. We basically hit start over mode next year due to that.

we've really quit playing any freshmen routinely now other than Bradford and some of Frazier. Even Norris is being used lightly in the lineup. If you look most of our production lately its from Parks, Freeman, Thigpen, Vickerson, Shepherd, Brownlee and Ogden. Of that group only Brownlee is not a SR. And like him or not, right now, the other starter is Collins, another SR. So next year the outfield will likely be Bradford, Brownlee (if he can stay healthy) and possibly Renfroe(?maybe catcher). The infield is a total crapshoot but I assume Norris and Frazier would have a leg up to start somewhere.

Outfield - Bradfrod, Brownlee, Stark
Infield - Henderson, Frazier, Norris, Rea
C - Renfroe

I'm with 8Dog. It's going to be very tough next year. We have everybody back on the mound, but I am just not confident we'll see a big jump there. I think we've seen enough from Stratton and Routt to know what to expect. Parks and Vickerson have been the offense and Shepherd as of late. Rea has to come in and hit immediately, Norris has to do what he did at the beginning of the year, and we're going to have to hope Brownlee can hit consistently.

Hey- if someone can use that's baseball, I can "we're young".

There are going to be a lot of battles next fall and spring for a lot of spots.

I think Hunter Renfroe is going to be the catcher, and then Brett Bozeman and Mitch Slauter will also get some action there as well. We definately lose a lot in terms of experience.

1B- I think it will be Wes Rea if he is healthy, possibly Norris, Bozeman is a possibility, and Johnathan Holder is also a candidate.

2B- I don't think Frost will start- I think it will be Adam Frazier or Demarcus Henderson.

3B- Norris if Rea starts at first, possibly Brayden Jones.

SS- I think it will be Demarcus Henderson who will hopefully be back with 100% vision after having eye surgery. Frazier is certainly possible as well.

RF- Brandon Woodruff if he bypasses the MLB draft, certainly could be Holder or Stark here.

CF- CT Bradford- probably the only lock on the team.

LF- Brownlee

DH- Stark, Renfroe, Holder

It is going to be critical for a lot of our young players to have a productive summer once the season is over. They need at bats and innings. The good news is out of the above lineup, even though there is a lot of inexpereince for sure, there is only one true freshman, and there are only two guys that haven't ever played a game in the SEC- including that true freshman.

Just like our pitchers last year who struggled as freshmen and came back better, the same thing will happen with most of these players as well. Speaking of the pitching- that should be an area of strength next year. We probably return our entire starting rotation- Pollorena, Routt, and Stratton, and our top relief pitcher in Caleb Reed. We also get Ben Bracewell back- he has looked good in practice. Then we also return guys like Girodo, Graveman, and Busby and then we also have the dual position guys like Stark, Norris, and Renfroe, and then we are adding some more talented freshmen in the mix as well like Trevor Fitts, Jacob Lindgren, Will Cox, and a couple of legit dual position guys in Holder and Woodruff.

I think next year, there is no doubt that there are a lot of questions about the position players- but our pitching and defense should still be pretty solid next year. We may have some guys struggle a little bit at the beginning of the year at the plate, and then come around later- sort of like this year. Only difference is, we will still have at least a year or two of hopefully good solid production from those players. So, I think next year, we will see a similar record as to what we are having this year, and depending on how those players develop, possibly even better.

Why is surgery required as opposed to just using corrective lenses that would have allowed him to play some this year? Does he actually have something wrong with his eyes beyond a vision problem that requires surgery?

They tried contact lenses, and they didn't conform to the shape of his eye. So, they are going to do some type of eye surgery- it sounded similar to Lasik. It should be pretty minor, and he should be fine next year. He is actually supposed to play summer league baseball in New York this summer.

The coaches are trying to get a medical redshirt for him.

I sure hope Henderson doesn't have to go through that. McCann was wearing different glasses for hitting and catching, he had to sit numerous times for blurry vision, and he struggled both at the plate and behind the plate. I think he had to go back in again to correct something else after the initial surgery. I'm sure that's worst case scenario, but it always concerns me when someone that young has to have some sort of corrective vision surgery.

but McCann is also hitting .307 right now. If Henderson has similar results, I won't complain.
