How do you sell this program to recruits?

The early playing time angle is obvious, but how do you convince them that things will dramatically turn around and that they'll be playing for conference titles before they graduate? I think it will be extremely hard to get DB's to sign on to the scheme we are running.

Id think our record would be trouble too but it rarely scares recruits away if we have a good recruiter along witha big program like ours. Remember Callahan, he had **** records here constantly and he was always getting top 10 classes. A winning record would help but it wont push the kids away.

According to Rivals...Callahan only had 1 top 10 class and that was in 2005. He did have another class ranked 12th.

1. we have lost games , by a slim margin, they could push things over the top
2. lincoln's a nice town where you won't get sidetracked with nonsense and you will get your degree
3. a lot of good db's have played in lincoln
4. riley is not a physco
5. historically Nebraska has a lot of wins, like more than ohio state
6. we only been down 1 year , in a transition year.
7. just as good facilities as anyone else, if not much better
8. if you like passing this is passing USA now
9. Nebraska fans are good to players. unless you get on the internets, and even then most are
10. a great place to play on the way to the NFL

I think we can agree that Callahan was a great recruiter. Stop being a punk. The option is still dead.

Well I sure hope this staff makes a concerted, sustained effort to bring in the best talent they can. We have some very promising verbals and I hope we go hog wild in recruiting defensive talent.

It was the point that he always recruited and got elite kids here even with a bad record.

Yes, depending on what site you go to, depends on how many top 10 classes we had.

actually a lot of db like to play press man. you tell them things will change when the get players like them. not hard to tell kids they will play for conference titles. heck when b10 does its fall camp tour you have guys from purdue saying the goal is b10 championship

Callahan was also on track for a Top 10 recruiting class in 2008 (Gabbert, Jonas Gray, etc) before it became apparent he was going to be fired.

Recruiting analysts have mentioned that bad records rarely scare recruits near as much as they do fans. Young men who are basically prima donnas believe in their ability to change things around if someone would "give them the damn ball" or "put them on the field".

That's not to say teams won't lose recruits to varying circumstances, but everyone acting like absolutely zero people want to come to UNL is a swing too far.

I'd tell them that the next coach will actually know how to coach football.

You are mostly right. Records don't scare recruits and as I have said, Nebraska is basically selling the future.

The only problem is when it gets really bad...then recruits have other coaches in their ear about how the staff won't be there long, or they are going to be stuck playing for really bad teams if they go there...ect. That is what gets recruits.

Right now, I think Nebraska really needs some momentum. Beat Sparty or Iowa and definitely Rutgers. Win 2 of the next three and get the players on board and build some momentum for recruiting. I think losing all three would be devastating. Losing 2 of three wouldn't be good...but it is what it is right now.

For sure.

We're pretty much pinning all our hopes on the fact that POB and a few other choice players like KJJ come here and give Riley something to showcase.

If KJJ feels like the fanbase is too sketchy and won't give Riley a chance, or Riley can't produce enough momentum on the field to give enough of those recruits a warm fuzzy, this game will be over sooner than later.

I don't know if we have to win X of Y, but something has to happen to get another dozen kids on board who can play.

100% agree Jflores. That's the crazy thing with recruiting is fans are thinking POB is the next coming of Jesus. Let's let him take a snap. Also, fans think that Ryker is the answer and Tommy A sucks... yada yada yada.. No matter what, let them do their job. It's fun to ***** and talk about Nebraska football, but at the end of the day coaches know, and you have to go with that until proven wrong.

I agree that records don't "scare" recruits (when it is a new staff) but winning is something that can "entice" recruits. A lot of times that can be an extra edge for a program and as we all know coming in second for a recruit is almost the same as coming in last. Said another way, your situation doesn't take you out of the game for most recruits but it will make things a little harder. Thus, over the next few months and into the next recruiting cycle you will find out just how good your coaches are at seling the program and their vision.

1. You (the recruit) don't need to worry about your position coach being hired away by another team.
2. If you make 1st team on the offensive line you will play every single down.
3. You are the only RB we are taking in this class, we won't take another RB.

Without that lightning-rod recruiter, it will be constant struggle to gain any traction.
