But I’m not just talking about him. Our DTs look like tubs of lard out there
1. Guys like Simmons and Sweat who are built like Greek gods are unique specimens that are hard to come by. We don't have one of those type of guys on this year's team, our fans will just have to accept that.
2. We started Braxton Hoyett for two years, who played at over 300 pounds with a gut poking out.
3. We are starting two freshmen in the middle of our DL who haven't been in our strength and conditioning program nearly as long as the older guys on last year's team.
I feel like this talking point is being overplayed a little bit. I don't think our struggles on defense were because we weren't in shape, I think it had more to do with missed assignments, poor angles and at times tackling form, and a good scheme by UL.
Erroll has been getting blasted the last few days, I feel like largely due to the play where he missed the one on one play with the QB on the boot leg in the 4th quarter. The dude still had 10 tackles and a fumble recovery in the game. He had 10 tackles in a game only twice all of last season. He's not the kind of LB that runs like a deer, he is a bulky, physical guy who is better jamming up the middle than he is chasing guys on the perimeter. Our DL was a bunch of very inexperienced guys going against one of the most experienced OL's in the country and a very elusive QB.
I'm not going to pretend that this is the most athletic and physically fit team we've ever had, but this "our defense is fat" narrative is a bit misleading and doesn't tell the whole story at all.
