How is our Secondary so bad?

I understand it's alot harder to recruit quality D Lineman. The quantity of them is limited but surprisingly our DL isn't that bad.

Our secondary is TERRIBLE. I'd have to imagine the worst of all P5 teams. Mediocre to bad QBs light us up and receivers are consistently running open by 10 yards.

Who coaches these guys, and why do we suck so bad at recruiting some people who can cover?

The key is always to watch where the coaches go in the portal for personnel.

Last year, after the defections, they hit the portal hard for secondary guys. For the linebackers, they picked kids that could at least fit the bill. Unfortunately, all they could come up in the secondary with were guys from DII schools who were there for a reason.

The hope was that these folks could fill in admirably while youngsters like Wuhad and Spells got their feet under them. Then, pick up some quality in this years class to go along with what you have already on the team.

It just hasn't worked out. The portal kids just aren't that good. The freshmen's bodies just aren't to the point where they are ready to be an every down player yet.

Looks like they are gonna have to hit the portal hard again this year.

We lost a lot of our secondary due to tampering of a former player turned coach. I would ban that guy from campus forever.

Pretty simple.

1. We lots a lot of good DBs to the portal.
2. The one good DB we brought in from the portal got hurt in the opening game.

If TX QB wasn't so bad at overthrowing wide open WR's streaking for the end zone TX may have scored at least 4-5 more TD's.

1. Fortune, Matthews, Porter. all starters at some point last year. All Gone via Portal
Addae, Mahone and Young graduating at S also hurt. That's all of the D starting secondary. We just didn't have replacement parts for all 5 slots.

Even though we lost Mesidor on DL the DL is still solid. Losing Cowan at Bandit wasn't a huge loss.
Loss of Chandler-Semedo hurts more than we thought.

Memo to HCNB:
Don’t take players as transfers from the FCS level. They were at those schools for a reason — their skill level is FCS. Next time, take take players from Power 5 schools or other FBS programs. Higher skill level. They’ll likely be able to stay within 15 yards of Texas receivers.

I guess I should have asked why are we losing our entire secondary to the portal? Guaranteed playing time in a P5 conference and they're bailing. I think I read somewhere that we lead the country in guys entering the portal.

There are two transfer portal windows in college football: 45 days "beginning the day following the championship selection," and a 15 day period in the first two weeks of May at the end of spring practice, a total of 60 days.

Those recommendations could be delayed if the board decides to send the entire transfer portal rule package back for further change and review.
