How is what the Miami Marlins are doing not racism?

They are aggressively seeking only Latin players and Latin coaches. Pretty sure the Atlanta Braves can't only seek white players so why is this put up with by Miami? This will get locked.

Considering they are opening a brand new stadium this year along with their historically bad gate numbers you cant really blame them. Its all about drawing in the Latin population of the Miami area and their dollars.

appeal to the Latin community but Miami is a big city with many cultures and this stinks of racism to me. Have you ever heard of another city in the USA blatantly filling their roster and coaching staff with a specific race/culture just to sell more tickets? This is going to backfire on them.

The Braves have a disparate number of people from the southeast on their roster. Isn't that sort of the same thing? Race doesn't necessarily have anything to do with it.

Sorry if I don't believe in affirmative action for baseball. Its the organization's choice how thay want to go about marketing and I can't say I blame them. Its not "racist" as it doesn't say one race is superior to another. May get the lock but my goodness this racism charge can get out of hand sometimes.

the Southeast is not a race. Latino and white are races. If the Braves blatantly seeked white players they would be shut down. Being a baseball team doesn't exclude the Marlins from the same rules as every other business in the USA. A business can not discriminate based on race. To do so is the definition of racism.

I've never heard of any organization signing players solely based on race since the 60's. They simply don't care.

That said, MLB teams signing regional players is nothing new. Heck, even the Cardinals have had a ton of guys from Missouri on their team, the Astros have always liked guys from Texas, and etc.

The bottom line is, it's not about race- it's about putting people in seats. And having local guys has been proven to successfully do that. Fans like to see the "local boy done good".

Actually, I think this is a welcome change for the Marlins. Their biggest market should be the Latino community. This is about them reaching out to them. They have to do what they are doing if they want to survive- or they'll have to move somewhere else. That's why they've built a new ballpark and changed the named to Miami.

If they really want to reach out to the Latino community, they'll lower their ticket prices. I think if they had dirt cheap tickets in the entire outfield- I really think they would clean up.

with that conspiracy theory in mind.... they also seem to always have an inordinate amount of black players who are very light skinned (Boozer, D.Williams)

Not a whole lot of melanin in this pic

17ing idiots, haven't those Mormons realized that us (white people) blow *** at basketball?

That's why they had Karl Malone. He could definitely pass for white.<div>

Technically speaking, "Latino" isn't a race. It denotes a geographic background. The Marlins aren't going after them because of the color of their skin. Are you really this sensitive?

The Marlins are doing exactly what they need to do - adapting so that they can become a sustainable organization. Their city largely picked up the bill for their stadium and they're doing their part to put butts in the seats and bring business to the city. Good for them. <div>
