How long before Dwight Howard wears out his welcome in Houston?

Some serious karma last night with Howard clanging free throws while the Lakers did the hack-a-Howard routine and beat the Rockets on a last second three pointer in Howard's face.

Howard couldn't hold any of the great centers (Shaq,Kareem,Olajuwon, etc.) jockstraps no matter how much hype he gets.

He seems to be playing pretty well for them so far, but that is 17ing awesome

I can't believe I missed that last night

I agree about today's centers. It's hard to believe that there was a time in which we had Shaq, Robinson, Ewing, and Olajuwon all playing at the same time while guys like Mourning and Mutumbo were considered 2nd tier guys. The game's changed, though. Everyone wants to play up tempo and most college "centers" seem to be about the size of a traditional power forward these days.

Whatever happens with Dwight from here on out, there's no doubt that he's severely tarnished his legacy. Back in Orlando, he appeared to be on his way to a first ballot HoF career. Now, it's a bit of a mess.

He's a better defensive player than any of them.. but on the other end, not so much

Statistically he might be. Howard is taking advantage of the fact he can bully all the around sub-par centers in the league. You really think Dwight could handle Shaq, Kareem, Olajawon, or Robinson?

Defense is more than guarding a guy one-on-one...

He controls the defensive backboards (probably THE most important aspect of playing defense.. you haven't done anything until you get the rebound) and changes shots around the rim. Could he handle them as in stop them? No, nobody can past or present. But he could certainly make them work harder to score. He's undersized as far as true centers go (he's only like 6'10) but he made up for it with superior athleticism. After the back problems he has lost a little of that but he's still the most imposing defensive center in the league.. by a mile.

I take it you never saw Hakeem or David Robinson in their prime. Both were as good on defense as Dwight Howard. David Robinson was basically identical on defense, although he had even less of a killer instinct than Howard.

Robinson was close.. Hakeem not even in the same universe nm

they were both great defenders.. Dwight Howard is one of the more athletic guys of all time at that position. He's up there with Bill Russell when it comes to defense and rebounding.. the guy just recently won DPOY 3 years straight (that's as many as Olajuwon and Robinson combined)

True, Olajuwon can't hold Howard's jock. He is just the NBA's all-time blocks leader. No big deal...

eta: Howard is a very good rebounder, but nowhere near Russell on rebounding. Neither are Olajuwon or Robinson for that matter.

Howard's mental capacity will

prevent him from ever being elite. With today's competition, he stands out, though.
