Those aren't exactly what I would call huge discipline problems. (Cue holier than thou people spouting off). These guys, not kids, are in college. Hughes probably drank 1 or 2 beers then a hour later drove home. Except since he isn't 21 he got a dui. Basically nyquil would have as much acohol as he blew. Pegues, that was stupid. Didn't pay a seatbelt ticket so he got another ticket except he had a open beer in the car. Was he drinking it or was there someone else in the car that was? I guarantee most people on this board did ALOT worse in college. This doesn't refer to any previous problems by any athletes, I am just referring to these particular incidents.

players are going to get arrested. Some things deserve a harsher punishment than others. Why can you not understand that?

Of course he's like most other coaches. I still can't believe that we have fans who don't realize that 90% of what comes out of a coach's mouth is BS, no matter who the coach is. All coaches talk a big game. It amazes me that Croom is the only one who seems to be held to such a high standard on this board.

I know that you personally touched the lives of countless young men while you were in your pre-condom salesman, coaching prime. I am sure that your little boy scout players never did anything to get in trouble at school or with the law. You were the great one coach. You were what Larry should have gone after instead of hiring Croom. Don't give up on your dream. Put the rubbers down Coach. You can get back in the game. You can be great again.

HELP US COACH 34! YOU"RE OUR ONLY HOPE!

Or a hug. He has very little control over what these guys get into. He can try his hardest to keep these guys clean but the fact is that they are of age, have huge, bullet-proof egos and think they can do what they want. It is a bad combo.

Coach, you really need to do a pro/con list with the title being "Continue being an MSU fan."

Here, I will start:

PRO: (this section intentionally left blank)

CON:
1. I hate every coach of every sport at MSU.
2. I like Arkansas and LSU better than MSU.
3. Even when MSU has success it pains me to enjoy it.

Assuming, without verifying, that your stats are correct, I think they miss the point. In order to be a fair comparison, you have to look at what players were arrested for in each era and whether they were convicted. You also have to look at discipline on the field and in the classroom, not just with the law.

Exactly. Take away the numerous arrests resulting from two isolated bar fights, which are hardly representative of a college male's character or any discipline problems within the program, and then see what kind of numbers you've got. Then compare the charged offense and underlying circumstances with the disciplinary action taken.

Jackie's label as "running a wild program" as you put it is actually more factually incorrect than Croom being labeled "the disciplinarian?" Instead of the other way around?</p>

At the end of Jackie's era the locker room was covered with graffitti and was totally trashed. You could tell he literally let the players run wild.

I dont know exactly about arrests and such but I know some players under Jackie did exactly what they wanted to do. I have heard some stories from one of my friends who was a starter on the team when Dontae Walker and others were on it. When coaches told players to start running at the end of practice, Dontae would just walk to the locker room. Of course you could tell it since he weighed 300 lbs.

It's the always-doomed blanket quote a coach makes, such as "Be good or be gone."

No different than fence building around Memphis...

I havent heard Croom thow out a quote like "Be good or be gone" in quite awhile. I think he learned pretty quick that you cannot control every move these guys make. It is some of our dumbass fans that make this image out to be like we have a preacher running our football team

I don't have any facts to back up my opinion on this, but I think if Derek Pegues played for Jackie Sherill in 1998 instead of Sylvester Croom in 2008, the SPD would have looked the other way and given him a warning instead of charging him. There is no logical explanation for Sherills players not having more arrests other than a concerted effort on the SPD's part to "look the other way" when it came to said players.

I know the MHP does it, I've personally witnessed it while riding with Coach Stansbury. He got let off with a warning going 85+ on Hwy 82 once the highway patrol saw who he was.

Sherrill probably reached out to local law enforcement and made some contacts for incidents such as this. It would not surprise me if Croom sees this as dishonest or a disservice to the young man and therefore hasn't made any contacts.

We had a thread on here over a year ago that could only confirm about 4-5 arrests during Jackie's tenure. Can anybody say we had more than that? I'm curious

by a deputy sheriff during that time. If you wanna believe only 4 or 5 players were ever arrested during Sherrill's tenure go ahead, but I can think of one incident where 4 players were arrested -- someone threw a brick through some chick's car window. There was also an incident at College Station where 2-3 players were arrested for some kind of sexual assualt. Both cases were "investigated" using a PI hired by Sherrill and later dropped.

Let's see, Jackie had players arrested for dealing drugs and were later thrown in the can, Pegues got cited for a seatbelt violation. Yeah, you are right again JR, I mean Coach.

I think it's fair to say the press was a lot less aggressive back in the 90s than it is now. For example, the C-L routinely files a blanked open records request every few months now and they never used to do that. Also, there was no Internet when Sherrill first started at MSU and even in his later years, the only MSU message board that existed was just a puppet of the athletic dept. So yeah, it would have been a lot easier to keep things under wraps when Sherrill was the coach than it is now.

I'm calling this complete and total BS. You must have some support... you say facts are facts. I think facts are only facts when they support whatever level of dumbassery you are spouting out at any given time. Prove it and I will admit I'm wrong. If you can't provide support, admit you are wrong. You know how to do that don't you Coach?

Wasn't Riddell the only off field incident last year? I don't remember anyone else. I think Sly has done a tremendous job in this area, especially looking at the problems at Tenn, AL, USC, and LSU. We probably have the lowest arrest rate next to Vandy (no source). To go from Donte and drugs and Nick's funny money (did pass it, not convicted) I think we are light years ahead of where we were.

Even so, read the "Bad Dawgs" section of any Reflector and you will see that the only difference in student athletes and students is that student athletes get way more press for way minor offenses.

Well, letsee off the top of my head....

That one defensive player went off the deep end and kidnapped his girlfriend.
Another player attacked or threatened a parking ticket person with a baseball bat.
The "pajama party" incident where some girl was sexually assulated at College Station -- that involved 2-3 players.
The incident at what is now Ricks where some player threw a concrete block threw some chicks window -- that involved at least 4 players.
