How much $$ can we offer Manny? He is making 260k here...

and I assume that Texas isn't going to offer him the 900k that Muschamp was making as associate head coach. Can we match up to 400k or 500k?

/I think that even if we can get close on the money, Texas is one of those jobs you just don't turn down if offered.

but then what do you do with Wilson? Would he be just co-DC in title and not salary?

I'm not saying we have to pay them a mill each like the big boys. But we've got to get out of the Sherrill & Croom era with paltry assistant salaries.

Problem is that its Texas. You can write your own ticket if you produce a good defense at Texas.

In the coordinator world, the OC and DC at Texas may be the best gigs in the country. Florida would be the only competition for the top spot. So like everyone has said, its pretty tough to turn down, if you want to be a head coach one day.

Judging by 2009 assistant coach salaries, MSU's total payroll for assistants was 1.8M, with Torbush's 260k ranking at #90 nationally. For the same year, Texas's total was 2.9M, with Muschamp's 900k ranking #2. He was associate head coach or whatever too, so you have to look a little further.

Akina, asst head coach and DBs, made 309k, #49. Major Applewhite, asst head coach and RBs, made 260k, #90.

I guess what I'm trying to get at is that, given his relative lack of experience and notoriety (as compared to Malzahn and other nationally known assistants), Texas isn't going to offer Manny a ridiculous salary. So we may actually be able to get close on the money.

I realize money isn't the only consideration, but I'm just trying to find some glimmer of hope to hang onto... Andwe obviously couldn't give Wilson the same pay, so something would have to be done there. here's the 2009 salary info.

whatever we offer, if Texas wants him enough they will have NO problem offering him more. I doubt ANY university could win a serious bidding war with Texas. I doubt any pro teams could either. If they offer the only way we keep him is if he just doesn't want to go there for some reason.

It might be Texas A&M. I think they both are "land grant schools" and they get a nice percentage from any oil pumped out of Texas.

You only do that if you have an old coach who will be retiring soon. I don't even really like it then, but to do it now with Mullen as our coach is just stupid. </p>

that's a BS job title and everyone would know it. It wouldn't work. Just call him Assistant Head Coach if we are going to pay that much.

The "Head Coach in Waiting" thing is a passing fad. Assloads of money to assistants is not. The real question is how quickly will assistant salaries inflate. I predict there will be at least 10 assistants with $1MM+ salaries in 5 years.

Could you give him the title Assistant Head Coach/Co-Defensive Coordinator and give him a raise while keeping Wilson at just Co-DC with a smaller raise?

As much as we're paying Mullen now, we're paying our top assistant less than 10% of it if there are no raises. We need to put in at least $1MM/year in assistant raises.

that we have made good hires that fit what we're trying to do.

Now, the question is whether we can offer significant raises to those assistants who have proven their worth, in order to keep them. By paying low to start with, we should have some upward mobility in terms of money to offer; whereas, if we had spent every penny to get assistants here, we'd have nothing more to offer.

Something also tells me that part of Mullen's deal is a willingness to pay assistants more also.

I suppose the first couple years they hadn't done enough to earn their salaries. I hope we can give the top level assistants at least 100k raises and those further down the line ~50k.
