For you to feel we are on the right track?

I asked this on the payboard, and I'm curious to know where yall stand.

What do you need to see in that game to give you confidence?

I need to see 4+ sacks and 35+ points scored and hold USM to less than 21. A couple of turnovers would be the cherry on top.

What say ye?

I'm not going to be greedy, at least a moral victory would be nice. Shapen not going down for the season in the first game would be a big big plus. Not having two lineman pulling in different directions colliding behind center would be very desirable. No players falling down running out of the tunnel into the stadium would be nice. At least 1 passing and 1 rushing TD would be awesome.

Winning by 17 or more and being pretty vanilla with our offensive play calling.

Defense needs to hold them to less than 21 and not give up big chunks of yards and plays in the running game.

We can't learn anything good from that game. We could beat USM 40-7 and still go 3-9. Seriously, Kentucky beat them 31-0 last year and went 4-8.
I basically agree with this but we are bad enough and unknown enough, particularly on the defensive side of the ball, that we could learn some good things about individuals. A defensive lineman going crazy and destroying USM won't tell us whether he'll be good against SEC competition, but I think learning we have somebody good enough to dominate G5 competition would be a positive sign.

It’s not so much the score but how well each position looks getting those points.

If all goes well this week, I'll be putting up a Skycam in Hattiesburg Saturday. I hope the game is never in doubt and I see most of their fan base with long faces...so about 8 of them.

As many have said, it’s hard to judge 1 game, especially against a team that just did a massive overhaul. Just be dominant, or look dominant in all phases of the game. I think that’s all you could ask for.

Ummm, USM.. brand new team, every starter on offense and most on defense … bunch of transfers many from Marshall with their coach … FYI, Marshall would have beat State last year almost certainly.

Last season has no bearing on this season. Both teams will be vastly different.

Let’s see…..Marshall went 10-3 last year and beat USM 37-3. Marshall’s coach moved to USM bringing many players so Southern s/b much improved. The game will be played at Hattiesburg and this will be their biggest game of the year. I’m hoping we just win the darn game.

Talking to a lot of their fans all ten of them, this is a big game to them. Probably be the biggest crowd they have had since the last time State went down there.

Look good on the Oline and Dline
Don’t make a bunch of dumb mistakes. I’m not talking about interceptions and fumbles. I’m talking 2 linemen pulling in opposite directions, etc.

do that and win convincingly and I feel good going into ASU. We could be up 24 in first half and win by 27. Just depends on who we play in second half. I would certainly work on a bunch of different stuff in the second half if we were up 24 and defense was playing well.

Good lord man. Have you seen Marshall’s schedule last year. Somebody in that crappy conference has to win 10 games. Doesn’t mean they were any good though. There is no way we lose this game & almost certain a double digit win.
