I can think of 4 coaches in the SEC I would take before Chip Kelly.

Saban
Miles
Richt
Spurrier

i'm not sure about miles.....unless you think he could recruit to msu like he does to lsu then that would be a disaster. he loses games he shouldn't constantly even with the boatload of nfl talent he has at msu. with "normal' players he'd be a disaster.

Other than a couple of inexcusable losses to OM, I don't see any problem in that department. He did fine with "normal" players at Oklahoma State. And from every article I've read about his players, they love to play for him.

in 2013, i'd take kelly over all of them except saban. spurrier in 1996 might be a different story.

that said, long term, i might would even consider kelly over saban given the age difference.

Please. We ain't paying that and he's not coming here.

well that's obvious. if he fails at the NFL level, there will be a big time top 10-20 all time program waiting to catch him with a $4+M contract.

the real question is "How much would Bobby Petrino be worth to you?".

Some other good names:
Chris Petersen- Boise State
Gary Patterson- TCU

I like BCS buster schools though.

petersen and patterson have turned down a whole lot bigger, better, and richer programs than msu, i don't know why anyone would think we'd have a shot at actually changing their tune.

if/when we are doing our next coaching search, i'd love for us to go dig up a successful FCS guy. ohio st did with tressell. oregon plucked an obscure, complete unknown OC from new hampshire and he's revolutionized CFB and is now an NFL HC. there are great, innovative football minds down there that are willing to think outside the box and would probably jump at a chance to get any BCS offer. if we'd have offered kelly before oregon found him, he'd have been our OC.

We pay $2.6M now. Why woldn't we pay $5M? Would it be worth it?

What if we knew he would take us to the upper tier of teh SEC?

Would it be worth $5M?

And to say we can't afford it is wrong. We can. It's $2.5M more per year..not that much.

We need offensive coaches at MSU. While King Jackie was not what you would consider an offensive guy, he at least had a plan for the offense (load up on OL and huge RBs) while he perfected special teams.

Spurrier could probably do well at MSU. I think Malzahn, Hud, Leach, all those guys could. I'm still hoping Mullen will, though. MSU has typically had good defenses due to the talent base (unless we hire braindead defensive coordinators).

WTF? If it was that easy to come by, everyone would be doing it. 2.5M is a shitload of money. You guys thinking that we are printing money due to these TV deals are f*cking morons.

Money is the reason Alabama got Saban. Period. If someone else was willing to pay 5M at that time, he would have gone there. That's how it works.
