How the 17 did Indiana get so good?

I suspect it started with good experienced leaders going out and finding a good experienced leader.

Whereas...we went out and found a greenhorn and rolled the dice.

They are an extremely experienced team and are well coached. You know why I'm not excited about getting a highly recruited OL from Arkansas that has four years eligibility? Because 1. We don't have the coaching staff that can develop players and 2. That's not how you win anymore.

We need to be looking for G5 players who have 80+ starts. Ole Miss just made the semifinals with an experienced QB from a Division II school.

Experience + Coaching = winning in this era (Indiana)
Coaching + Talent = being competitive in this era (Alabama)
Coaching + No Talent = showing competence on the field (Southern Miss)
Talent + Bad Coaching = making a second tier bowl game (Mississippi State)
No Talent + Bad Coaching = Massachusetts
Now that the secret is out of the bag getting those experienced players will be even harder

Paying everyone decently and having them buy in and care and understand the goals and mission.

Sounds easy but isn't.

Indiana is very physical and high football IQ

They get after you on Defense and don’t beat themselves.

pretty much the exact opposite of us.

People who say it’s all about the money should remember it’s 65% money and 35% having the right staff and players
The 65% is what makes the 35% possible, so still all about money.

They are recruiting at our level. Cuban buying a bunch of players isn’t why they are good. I mean maybe he is the one actually buying them but he’s not outspending other teams. Cignetti is either cheating some way that no one has found out about or he is literally the best coach who has ever lived. What he is doing with players rated that low is unheard of and almost unbelievable. To just beat the dog sh*t out of everyone with Mississippi State level talent is bizzaro world.
His experience means he knows what he needs. That’s invaluable. Even if Lebby is a great X’s and O’s guy, it will take him a while to figure out who he needs to succeed. That is an IF/THEN statement for you argumentative SOBs who think I said he is a good x&o guy or that he will get it figured out. If Lebby can’t pull it together we should be looking for a veteran coach who has been a successful…and Cuban money…

Their physical talent level is far superior and football IQ is far superior to every team in college football this season. In all 3 phases.
Cignetti has outsmarted the system.
Would love to see this Indiana team against

This is a tired narrative.
If it was all about money, Texas would win every year.
35% of the formula is knowing who to offer the money to.
The combination of the right players into the right system with the right assistant coaches AND THE MONEY.
NOT JUST TYE MONEY
My point in all of this is to say we don’t have the right administration with the right instincts to play this game to a level it takes to make the playoffs

He's got a type of player he's looking for. Look for behavior and common traits and family of origin trends on the roster.

Yeah Yeah, but could Lebby's ShowTime prevail vs IU....THAT'S the important question.

For the most part, the players seemed to concentrate on the game and not themselves. Not a lot of "flexing" after big plays.

They scouted/developed a fantastic roster then spent the dough to retain the roster and improve in a few positions after they went 11-1 last season.

They don't hold together their roster without spending solid money.

Not to say they are spending on par with the top dogs, but they are committing significant resources to football.

Please explain. I will admit I did not follow Indiana last year or years prior but it seems they came out of nowhere.

What was their recruiting ranking coming into this year?
According to Bud Davis and Chris Fallica, Indiana's running an extensive intelligence operation, where they hack into the server bases of their opposing teams and gather invaluable intelligence.

We used to have a center (hell, an entire OL) that played that way. I believe the year was 2014…

I remember when we made Les Miles cry like a little ***** after we beat LSU. Said our center was being mean to them.

probably some kind of evil subterfuge like taking a few ounces of pressure out of the game balls

This game just made his all time college coaching record 145-37. He’s won everywhere he’s been. Some guys are just good coaches and it doesn’t matter where they’re at. How it took him this long to get a head gig at this level is what’s crazy.
He's also had the same coordinators and much of his staff
