MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University men's basketball coach Bob Huggins has announced that Jalen Bridges has enrolled at WVU for the fall semester and has joined the Mountaineer basketball roster.

Bridges, a 6-foot-7, 180-pound forward from Fairmont, West Virginia, won the 2019 Bill Evans Award, given annually to the state player of the year in West Virginia. He also helped lead Fairmont Senior to four consecutive state championship game appearances, winning two.

"Obviously, we are very excited about Jalen joining the Mountaineer basketball program," Huggins said. "It's great to have West Virginians who take such pride in representing our great state."

As a senior, he averaged 21.6 points, 6.7 rebounds, 1.7 assists, 2.2 blocks and 1.9 steals per game, while shooting 62.1 percent from the field and 50.6 percent from 3-point range. In the 2019 West Virginia state tournament, he averaged 16.5 points per game for the Polar Bears.

Bridges was named captain of the Class AA Boys All-State Basketball First Team as selected by the West Virginia Sports Writers Association. Bridges also was named to the Class AA All-State Boys Basketball First Team as a junior and earned honorable mention honors as a sophomore.

In the rankings, Bridges is a four-star recruit by numerous scouting services: No. 18 small forward and No. 67 nationally by 247sports.com, No. 72 in ESPN's Top 100 and No. 22 small forward and No. 93 nationally by Rivals.

"Jalen brings great size to our perimeter game with a very accomplished skill level," Huggins added. "He will certainly join our other perimeter guys in their ability to stretch the defenses."

Welcome, Jalen! A lot of great young talent on this years squad. I expect us to be a lot better, especially by years end in March. This is already an NCAA team, but how far can Huggins take this group of young guys?? Exciting times for WVU B-Ball again!!

Let's wait till we actually see the team.
I do think WVU should be a bubble team this year. This signing doesn't change much. We need to see evidence that McCabe's game has reached that level.

I love Huggins and know he will get us back on track, but I am curious to see how the new guys play and am prepared for things to take another year to get back on track. I would love to finally land someone that turns out to be a one and done lottery pick that takes the media by storm. Don’t know that Oscar is that guy, but would love it if he was/is.

I just see a 9-9 or 8-10 Big 12 season. Winning out in the non conference will really help.
Oscar is polished as a post. He needs to add to his game. Most likely won't be an one and done. The more he can make his game versatile the better WVU will be and the better he will be for the NBA. As of right now I don't think Culver and Oscar will be able to play on the floor together for more than 10-15 minutes. If that can get to 25 than we can make a possible run to the Sweet 16.

This is a win-win. With the open scholarship, JB can either redshirt or play depending on how he develops practicing with P5 players, strength programs and coaches. We get the top in-state player and don't have to wait another year to try and sign him. Great move Huggs!
