Does anyone really think there are not enough walk ons??? WTF is going on? This is freaking ridiculous. If any of them had a clue they would concentrate on why we have a shockingingly terrible number of 4 year contributors on this team. What a freaking joke. Also it sounds like Riley met with Rimington today and it sounds like the IADDR lectured Riley on the importance of the walk on program. We may have something groundbreaking here.

Yeah, why was Riley giving out so many scholarships to walk-ons? Could those not have been used on...I don't know...scholarship players? No need to get worried about this, I think things just got lost in translation. Clearly Dave lectured Mike on the ills of giving all those walk ons scholarships and how they have lost the drive that made them special. He let him know he needed to pull the scholarships from all the former walk ons, thus returning them to their status as homegrown 5 heart players. GBR! MNGA!
Of course he could… And many Riley supporters have said as much as well. Not sure what fight you’re starting to pick this time…Yeah, why was Riley giving out so many scholarships to walk-ons? Could those not have been used on...I don't know...scholarship players?
Not a fight. The guy above mentioned the six (?) scholarships for walk-ons. Just wondering why we didn't recruit players to use some of those.Of course he could… And many Riley supporters have said as much as well. Not sure what fight you’re starting to pick this time…

I think we currently have a very healthy walk on program.

I’m gonna go out on a limb and say we did recruit players for those scholarships... but since Riley is such an average recruiter, some of those recruits went elsewhere, if you can believe that. The nerve of those recruits...Not a fight. The guy above mentioned the six (?) scholarships for walk-ons. Just wondering why we didn't recruit players to use some of those.
I don't doubt that DR was prompted by somebody in the administration to mention the walk on program on his list of things he wanted to look at just to appease some letter writers (or email senders). I don't believe anybody who is sound of mind believes it was a major converstion piece in their discussions. For heaven's sake I hope to heck Riley doesn't take it to mean we have to try to PLAY more walk ons. We probably have too many playing now.No offense, but if the walk on program was even discussed, the meeting was a colossal waste of time. The reason Mike Riley doesn't have 24 wins instead of 17 isn't because we don't have enough players paying their own way to school.
A better topic would have been how much money Riley will be afford to give to the Boomer Esiason foundation.
Apparently, old drug, steroid and alcohol abusers are a better judge of talent.
Weird how this works, thread has potential...
Rimington never said there wasn't enough walk-ons like almost everyone in this thread has presumed. He says wants to help fix it. Maybe he means upgrading walk-on talent or a taking different approach on how to get some of players that now go to South Dakota St. & North Dakota St to stay and walk-on at Nebraska. Bo screwed up a lot relationships with some of the HS coaches in-state. Maybe Dave can help Riley with that.
Easy.. He's never used roids......................
No scholarships for walk-ons, that damn Riley is ruining the walk-on program! Dem cornfed boys deserve it!
Don't fill up the 85 allotment, Riley can't recruit! Look at the leftover scholarships, unacceptable!
FTR, I'd prefer the allotment is filled on signing day and attrition in the spring and summer opens up spots for deserving walk-ons.
Agree.Never used roids? Lol
Ironic... you lecture people who weren’t there for calling it a lecture, and then you lecture us with what you think was said even though you weren’t there.First, how does someone know there was a lecture? Who spilled the beans on this lecturing that was handed out? That wording seems to be a bit of posturing. Jason Peter and Trev might want to lecture Riley...that's not Dave's game.
Second, I'm sure Dave's perspective is that the walk-on program was a great help to Nebraska in the past. While there were a few shining stars that developed from walk-on status, the biggest part of the walk-on program was the depth that it helped to provide. Walk-ons were given plenty of reps as freshman and sophomores on the practice field and some of them grew into their positions as their skills increased and their frames filled out. They weren't people that were just thrust into positions because some schollie guys didn't work out.
IMO opinion this difference can be seen even in how we talk about walk-ons today. This board bemoans most walk-ons being on the two deep because it means the kids with stars didn't live up to their potential. In the Osborne era I never heard this about walk-ons. People talked about the walk-ons putting in the hard work and effort on the field and in the weight room to earn the job. This caused a pride in having walk-ons contribute. I can't remember the last time anyone had talked about pride in having walk-ons playing.
Third, this isn't a "Riley" problem. It extends back to Callahan and probably even Solich. Now maybe people like Dave need to understand a strong walk-on program that the players and fans take pride in is not possible anymore. That's a debatable issue. However, let's not act like because we have some walk-ons playing today that the "walk-on program" is going strong.
You obviously don't know Dave Rimington at all. It's fun to be snarky. But be snarky about something you know about. It's obviously not Dave and not walk-ons.Ironic... you lecture people who weren’t there for calling it a lecture, and then you lecture us with what you think was said even though you weren’t there.
Made me chuckle...
Take it easy, it was just funny to me. You don’t see the irony? Sorry, next time I will try to stifle my laughs. You obviously don't know Dave Rimington at all. It's fun to be snarky. But be snarky about something you know about. It's obviously not Dave and not walk-ons.

Maybe its time to emulate Wisconsin they seem to whip our butts every year and they have great success with walkonsIf you read the board, it's fairly obvious that I can take it.
From what I heard Remington's point is that it used to be a big part of our identity and success. Years ago almost every other coach and program said that a solid walk-on program wasn't worth it. (No one else had the focus we had and that is why it was our identity.) So Dave wanted to emphasize that he thinks it can still be possible regardless of what the naysayers say. (Thank goodness Osborne never listened to the naysayers.)
I will just tell you the big topic, however, was physicality. (Now is the time for all your roid jokes as we cover up what might be the #1 problem with this team.)

It's sarcasm. If you go to his Twitter he is completely blasting people who say that.
Everyone knows we should be focusing all of our turnaround energy on the county scholarship program. Bringing it back will solve at least half the problem.
