i absolutely hate it when the Dbs play so far off the Wrs. I would rather them play up in your face bump in run coverage at least try to jam the wide receiver on the line of scrimmage

I have noticed throughout the games I have seen we always seem to give the opposing wide receivers a 10 yard cushion that's an easy 5 yard completion or a 1st down completion

It depends. If you're going to do that, you need to get pressure or there's likely going to be an open receiver for a big play.

Same. I feel like we could compromise and play 5-7 yards off and accomplish the same thing but get to the WR screens a little quicker.

I'm not the Defensive expert though

I watched Ohio State the other night and I was jealous. 7 guys on the line of scrimmage as 3 DB's were nose to nose with the wide receivers. 56-0.

Bitching about the D at this point is funny, and you obviously don't understand Diaco's D, who by the way, is currently killing it. We will always find something to ***** about I suppose.

I do hate it when we dial up a blitz and we have the big cushion and the qb unloads it to a wide open wr 5 yards down field right before we hit him.

I hate that style, but I don't think you want our current dbs running bump. We give up a smaller 7 yards now, instead of a wide open 45.

It’s called athletes. Some have 5* and some have 3*. Guess which one is OSU and which one is Neb.

I checked and surprisingly enough, OSU's starting corners are a 4* and a 3*, both redshirt sophomores. Didn't check to see if if either started or played significantly last year.

I seen one play where our db tried to strip the ball after a catch, instead of tackling.
their reciver run past him, 2 guys come over to tackle him, and the db who missed the first tackle tried to strip it again. Failed both times. hopefully that was reviewed on film and was corrected. we have seemed not to get torched on sideline passes recently which is a good development!

Our starting corners are both top 250 4*'s
This. Damn it people, there is a tendency on here of late to talk as if we have been recruiting on the level of Iowa State. For sure, we are not recruiting like the "big boys", but our classes have been very respectable and we have a decent level of talent. Wisconsin doesn't recruit with the big boys either, but look at them.

At some point you just have to start realizing it isn't talent, but coaching. Our offensive line has many quality athletes that were highly recruited. Yet they play like ****. That is coaching.

Few teams play press coverage all of the time. Lots goes into it. What is the line doing with stunts and blitzes. When you blitz you have fewer back 8 to cover. Is there safety help if the WR blows by your CB. You don't dial up press coverage if you don't have confidence in your DB's to be physical and maintain contact.

As to why quick outs are open just before we hit the QB, that is part of the QB reading the hot receiver. Most likely there is a blitz that leaves you down a person or two in the back 8 and you can't afford to let a WR blow by you.

Our corners are often there to make the play but they are out of position just enough to miss or get a penalty.

I get frustrated that we are so far off that the receiver has time to catch the ball, turn, run 3 yards or so and put a juke on the db. I don't mind giving up the short completion to avoid the big play but damn- at least be in position to make the tackle afterword instead of having to track down a guy in what amounts to an open field.

Edit; didn't read the entire thread and now I see multiple others have said basically the same thing. Sorry for the redundancy.

or how about close enough to make a big hit and dislodge the ball?
