Wardlaw, Veazy and Geno, have to know something. Call it my "black helicopter" scenerio: Word leakes out Friday that we have a coach, then word spreads that it is Petersen. I have followed a ton of coaching searches at other schools, and I have never seen a rumor like the one Friday that didn't come true. Byrne gets word to the beat writers, and website folks that the talk of Petersen has to stop. Websites like Gene start spinning new names and old names, Wardlaw consistantly avoids the message board on Friday until the statement is released. Then Friday evening Petersen releases his statement, in that statement he metions MSU by name. Now Wardlaw keeps posting that Petersen is still in the running, Gene is nowhere to be found, Sparty is sticking by his sources, and Veazy is slowly eliminating candidates, and even breaks the news about Kelly, who just happened to get the Oregon job??. I know its sounds like a movie script and its not true, but damn this is fun.

You have followed a ton of coaching searches? Are you really bored enough that you like to follow other schools coaching searches all of the time?

...and you can tell he doesn't know because he's been bringing up other people's names in his blog. Some info about them, finding out if they've been contacted, etc.

MSU. And hell, Gene has been getting left in the dark by the athletic department all year.
While I don't think they have been keeping anything quiet, I guess Bryne could have requested they keep quiet. While they don't have to I would imagine that they could choose to so they wouldn't join Gene as writers that will be kept in the dark by the AD. I don't see that being the case though

I was thinking along the same lines as you. The Petersen rumor got damn hot and then all at once everyones sources told them it was a nogo or total BS. Almost like Byrne sent a text out telling everyone to STFU!

He could be doing Byrne a favor now to get more access in the future.

If he is, he'd better hope his boss doesn't find out because it might get him fired. I don't think it's plausible at all. His job is to report the news and being the first to name the new MSU coach would be a real feather in his cap. If he knew, we'd all know.

For reporters to hold a story for several days on the promise of exclusive information once it is released

to tell him that would be worth it? Petersen took Byrne into the secret scientiology room where he saw Tom Cruise rape a midget?

All they could do is say MSU has contacted Petersen. No reporter would report that it is a done deal and then something causes it to fall through. Everyone has reported what they or their sources know for a fact. Newspapers don't just go on peoples word that it is a done deal when it might still be in the talks phase.

Editted to add: See Dan Rather for what happens when you don't have concrete facts to back up your reporting. I doubt any reporter wants to jeopardize his career just to be the first to announce who MSU's coach is when the risk far outweighs the reward.
