I know the president of one of these roto-molded cooler companies. He told me it doesn't matter what brand cooler you use if the lid is being opened every 15 minutes. He also told me that he has never sold one of his cooler's to someone that actually needs it. And he's sold 10s of 1000s of them.

Apparently no YETI's are actually sold anymore. So much fun has been made of the dubmasses that actually bought the first few that now everyone I come in contact with that has one says it was "given to them" by their company.

Haha, no problem. It still had ice in it this morning (from the ice I put in it on Friday night) and it has been outside the whole time. On the creek this weekend in the sun and in my backyard when we got home yesterday (mix of sun and shade). I look forward to seeing if the few beers that were still in there are still on ice when I get home this afternoon. Regardless, can't beat it for $30.

That ain't much of a test, inside, at 70 deg. Put it outside in the sunshine all day for five days in 90+ weather and see how it does. I have had every cooler made and the engle-yeti-k2 types do work better in 90+ heat although not as well as they claim. I've saved enough in ice costs over the last 5 years to buy two more. But hey, at least he won't have to chain that Coleman to his Prius.......

Who needs a cooler that does this? I get people that do serious, multiday fishing trips. I know farmers that like the convenience of not loading up their cooler with ice every day. I get the convenience if you're doing multiday camping trips where you are staying right next to your car, but don't want to drive for ice refills. But that describes roughly 1% of the people I know that use yetis. Who else has a real use for a yeti?

Most people I see with yeti's are actually using them in situations where a $25 cooler or even a bag cooler would be a hands down better choice. Like people dragging their small yeti to the tennis courts for a couple of hours.

Totally agree^^^^..... Its all in the name and how "cool" (no pun intended) you think you look showing up with a Yeti. Majority of the populous will refill their cooler with ice every day no matter the cooler. Everyone wants fresh ice and will usually pour out perfectly good ice each day just to put fresh ice in.

Dont care if its grizzly bear proof either. Dont think Im going to be anywhere near a grizzly bear in the near any time soon and if I am, Im gonna hope he gets what he wants from the cooler so that he doesnt come to me upset about not getting into it......

As someone who has had every brand of cooler known to man on the farm, the Yeti is the best at keeping ice and staying coolest the longest. The price is ridiculous no doubt but I didn't buy mine, my seed company gave me mine.

And a lot of these same people have Drake or Browning stickers on their back glass even though they don't hunt or they did go hunting one time and a diver down plate on the front of their vehicle. They're not a diver either but they did go to the beach on their senior trip.

Can't argue that most folks that have them could get by cheaper. But the "test" was still bogus and I'm in that 1%

For people that need it, great, and even for those that don't need them, great (as long as they don't show up to my 20' boat for a day trip to the islands expecting to bring their 100 lb yeti), I just don't get what people like that are thinking. You'd think as soon as they picked it up, they'd think about whether what they were doing really required them to haul about a heavy ice chest. I can't think of too many times where I picked up a loaded ice chest and thought it was too light for my tastes.

I'm a closet yeti owner. I go on about 2-3 of those 1% type trips a year and ended up getting a yeti a few years ago. I could get by without it but would just have to throw more fish back. When I use it outside of those 1% type situations then I just feel like a deusch and typically don't admit to having one. I'm not one to do the math on ice savings vs. cooler costs because that's just trying too hard to justify a ridiculous purchase; but I do enjoy keeping a few limits of redfish cold for 3 days until I get back to civilization. What's that worth? I don't know, but I don't regret having it in those situations.

Think I'll get ink instead, I've got 4 Colemans

Did some internet research awhile back.

When rating these ice chest, they pack it with a block ice, and a temp. sensor.

Lid never opened.

They put it in a 90 degree room, and when the sensors says 32 degrees, test over.

Bear proof not required for me.

I'll put my ice machine up against any cooler on the market. I roll with a Kenmore sticker on my F150.

I agree with that - leaving it indoors was not a true test. I bought one Friday night because I was going canoe camping with my family and my go to cooler needed to be retired. I did not research it at all. I just went to Wal Mart to buy food for my trip and wanted to get a cheap cooler that would work for an overnight canoe trip. I bought the Coleman because it was cheap and had a handle and wheels.

I was so impressed with how it retained the ice during this trip (really, really surprised me) that I made a post elsewhere (Zero Dog Thirty board**) and DS saw my post. A few of my observations based on comments:

1. I didn't open it every 15-minutes, but it was opened a lot. Kids getting drinks and snacks and adults getting beer. Also opened for meals.
2. It has been outdoors since Saturday morning (canoe, sandbars, and my driveway) and there is still ice in it - I just drank the last leftover beer and it was ice cold.
3. No one that I know is planning on giving me a YETI and I'm not dropping a car note on a cooler.
4. Personally, I would only use a YETI type cooler a couple times per year for camping, etc., which is why I went cheap. After my experience, I'm certain that the Coleman that I bought would keep my beer and food cold for a 3-day canoe or camping trip. With my normal cheap coolers, the beer is lukewarm on day 3.
5. This is the one I have, DS - not sure if the characteristics will vary from the one you have chosen: http://www.walmart.com/ip/Coleman-50-Quart-Xtreme-Wheeled-Cooler
