You can tell by the player defections and the type of players that we are now recruiting, that we were buying players. I don't believe that Stansbury is dumb enough to not have discipline in his program. I believe he did what it took to get some top talent and then they knew they were untouchable or could do what they wanted. Stansbury had to take a careful approach with how he handled those players. I heard Mike Leach say one time that buying players meant you became business partners and as a coach you don't need any business partners. <div id="isChromeWebToolbarDiv" style="display:none"></div>

about 90% of all basketball programs out there are buying players to some degree and that's probably conservative. Realistically you don't get 4 and 5 star guys much of anywhere without offering something, especially at non-traditional powers like we are. But the NCAA knows this is SOP in college basketball recruiting so it is allowed to carry on. Nothing in college is dirtier than recruiting in basketball where the right one or two players can totally change your program. I will grant you though that a large percentage of the "talent" we got seemed to come with lousy attitudes.

It is yet to be seen if Ray can? So far I think he has done a decent job since being on campus as far as recruiting

There are certain alumni that just pay kids and their families visits and actually hand over cash.

The other way it works it that, and I have seen this, a player or recruit show up somewhere and is told to carry this file or box across the room and is paid a large some for the work he has just done.

There are many other ways such as cars or rent. Any way that you can dream it, it happens, everywhere.

boosters can donate large sums to AAU programs as "sponsors" and the people running the team take their cut then spread the wealth. Sometime, you have to pay just to be able to even recruit a player. Think about it- you have inner city kids from Jackson and Memphis- who's parents live meagerly to say the least- going to Vegas to play in week long tournaments and hotel stays. And they make multiple trips like that to places. Boosters from schools fund those trips.

Basketball is by far the filthiest of the recruiting

Completely out of control. Which is why Stricklin's hire of a guy who will do things "with honor" makes me think he's a *****.

He was employed as an AAU coach

Where does an AAU program get the money to pay someone enough to be able to live in Los Angeles? USC and UCLA knows where

and I know the C34 crowd will say we already were but just wait... this is going to get comical. We'll win less games the next 5 years than we won the last 2.

Major programs pay players to go there and make the Sweet 16, but 3 or 4 Sweet 16 teams consistently make it out of mid majors. I think Shaka plays it right, but I also think he's a good coach. I think some "top coaches" aren't that great.

Kids are not getting any money. AAU coaches, highschool coaches and parents/guardians are getting the money. It is the handlers that are the problem, but the players know they have leverage.<div id="isChromeWebToolbarDiv" style="display:none"></div>

What a hilariously wrong statement.
If you want to be at least in the ballpark, then qualify your comment with 'major'. As in- 90% of al MAJOR basketball porograms.
Alabama State isn't buying players. UNI isn't buying players. Weber State isn't buying players. Probably all the teams in 17 conferences, and most teams in another 10 conference aren't buying players. There are a handful of conferences that are 'major'.

A 2* player isn't getting paid. Hell, most 3* players aren't getting paid since they are a dime a dozen in major college ball, and mid major or below dont have the resources.

I was told nearly 10 years ago that not only was Rick dirty, but he was among the dirtiest in the SEC. When I attempted to share said information at the time, I was ridiculed mercilessly. Hell, the cheating was the big reason for the beef between Rick & Gottfried. They were arguably the 2 dirtiest coaches in the conference at the time and were recruiting a lot of the same players - Mario Austin, Mo Williams, etc. Both programs were essentially in a Cold War nuclear standoff waiting for one coach to get pissed, turn in the other & force the other coach to go nuclear in response, taking down both programs.

And if it wasn't clear before Gary Ervin, it sure as hell should've been clear afterwards. Why else would you let a quality player like Ervin (and yes, he was a quality player. that "he sucked" ******** won't fly here) transfer not just within the conference, but within the division? The obvious answer is because he had the goods on Rick and we had no choice but to let him go wherever the hell he wanted or face the music when he ratted out Rick.

Dawgeezer and others will try to convince you that Sidney was the only real problem and the reason for Rick's downfall, but the facts simply don't support that idea. Rick's recruiting tactics finally caught up to him. It took nearly a decade, but it was bound to happen eventually. Especially when it's combined with a lack of discipline, little or no S&C program enforcement, etc. There were a host of factors involved, Sidney was just the final straw, so to speak.

You do realize that in the press conference when he was hired Ray said that one of the first things he had to do was get out and talk to the AAU coaches, don't you?
