... he's either lost all the time or he just doesn't care about telling you anything other than the extreme basics like a) when the ball is snapped and b) when the play is over. All that stuff in between is irrelevant.

I haven't listened to Jack in years.

you have to listen to crowd noise to keep up with what is going on.

Still, he's earned the right to stay as long as he wants. And he IS stubborn, so we might as well quit worrying about it.

I like to listen to the many ways Ellis politely covers for him. From the Georgia game:

Jack: And the pass is incomplete at the goal line (MSU crowd screaming wildly in background)

Jim: Actually Jack, the officials are going to rule he caught the ball for a touchdown.

Jack: Are they? Good! Touchdown, Bulldogs!

My grandmother in Oakland knew that was a touchdown before he did. LOL, Ellis is always polite - "the officals are now saying," "Its hard to tell from up here," the receiver came down just in bounds (on a crossing pattern over the middle).

Screw it,we are stuck with it. Have some JD during the game, like Jack, and enjoy!

He always says something like, "I've told [fill in name of current AD] to just let me know when its time to step down." I've been raising my hand since about 1992 trying to let him know I think its time.

Sadly, I have to agree. There isn't anyone alive less than 65 years old that can remember anybody other than Jack calling a radio broadcast of MSU football. Its hard to imagine anyone else. That said, after the game last night I was thinking, ITS TIME. Maybe they could keep him involved somehow, let him do some taped interviews during the pre game show, come on at halftime and read the stats and do some commentary, do part of the post game show with Bart and Matt. I don't know though, as hard headed as he is, he might tell them to shove those type ideas.

when I did listen to him, I always thought he was the best... before the snap, you just about knew where all 22 players were on the field...

does anybody remember those days?

I had to go to a local watering hole to see the game. Of course my wife got sleepy and I had to take her home and then come back. On the trip I found the game on the radio and Jack almost put me to sleep. He used to say things like "Joe is split wide to the right and Earl is in the slot" but now it's just "Pass is good for a touchdown." I love him like an uncle, but I do wish he would do the right thing and realize he is no longer effective. Like theKang should have done.

I honestly think Jack should be thanking the explosion of College Football on TV/ESPN etc. Ican't tell you the last time I listened to Jack what with all the awaygames being on TV. Add in the Croom era where I just wouldn't listen to a radio broadcast if we weren't on TV and you have a significant # of fans/alumni that aren't really focused on a radio broadcast.

I would bet that if this was the middle 1990s and we were all following many games on the radio, there would be a much louder outcry for a move. I was told last night that Jack doesn't even have any inflection in his voice when State does something good.

He just tells you what happened and he does it very slow. I know Houston didn't help matters with a fast paced offense but he was always a play behind. He would still be talking about a 3 yard gain while the crowd is cheering for a TD.

No one has ever earned the right to stay in any job as long as they want if they aren't/can't do the job any more. It's embarrassing to the school, and if Jack wasn't senile, it'd be embarrassing to him too. He should have stepped down a few years ago.

I worked with Jack while a student at MSU, way back when he was sharp as a tack. I agree he's pretty much lost it, but his 57 YEARS give him the complete right to say himself when he wants to go. To say the least, he's earned the right.

Jack works for Mississippi State. Mississippi State does not work for Jack. The radio show isn't a broadcast of Jack Cristil. It is a brodcast of Mississippi State football.

Nobody associated with Mississippi State has earned the right to be irrelevant and non-functional at their job.

Jack needs to retire. I hope he doesn't go Ron Polk on us.

it is a problem that he no longer describes the action or puts the excitement of the game in his voice. I think the drop off has been big this season. I'd like to see somebody really good doing play by play and Jack making color comments from time to time. I miss the vivid descriptions of action and players that makes sports on radio better than tv sometimes. If we don't get improvement soon, this will have to be Jack's last season.

He is all I have ever known but it is time. He truly can't keep up anymore and it would be a nice way of letting him hang on but not be thrown out. Not sure if he would do it but it seems the only logical thing to do. Change is hardbut sometimes it is progress.

years and was saddened by the massive drop in his performance from my memories of his glory years. I too think that his duties should be realigned to a support role of some kind if he wishes to stay active with MSU sports. The only other thing I can think to say at this point is "thank god for Jack Cristil its been one hell of a ride".

I listen to Jack most every game out of necessity. Who cares if he's a little behind or gets a name wrong? The man has had to watch 57 years of the most horrible football on Earth, and has described it in a way that few could emulate. He has been the football equivalent of a tortured dissident in a Chinese prison camp. 57 YEARS. You guys who want to throw him out now that he's on the backside of his golden years are the same ones who will wonder why there's no loyalty from football coaches anymore. Why should there be?

Who the 17 even listens to radio broadcasts anymore? Only the diehard MSU fans who SHOULD know the story. Cristil is 17ing FAMILY. He has a pass from me until he croaks. And for those wondering the difference between Cristil and Polk, Cristil didn't retire, then unretire and start announcing for a conference rival. Nope, he has served MSU faithfully for 57 17ing YEARS. How about giving him some understanding and some 17ing RESPECT. If you're listening to the broadcast, get your excitement from the record-breaking crowd noise in the background, and your facts from live stats.

I'd say anyone listening should care. I've listened to Jack Cristil for most of my life. But it's way past time for him to step aside and let someone who can actually do the job take over.

He's definitely not on his A-game these days, but Jack has earned the right to say when he'll step down. Retirement would literally kill him.

And there is absolutely no valid comparison between Ron Polk and Jack. Don't insult the man like that.

be in favor ofasking Jack to step aside?

I mean, wouldit take Jack embarrassing himself in a big way? (Think Woody Hayes)

Personally, I'd rathersee Jack step aside, so MSU would have the time and opportunity tohold some celebratory events in his honor.

What I think we should do, NOW, is go ahead and bring in another announcer to complement what we have, and then put Jack on a third mike.
I think some have aluded to this already.
Then we let Jack hang around as long as he wants to do so. This includes helping him to road games, etc. as needed.
Jack is family.

Seriously? You take this stuff SO seriously that it really matters to you whether it's Bumphis vs. Heavens who catches a pass?!? This is entertainment for people like us, nothing more. It's a way to pass the time. For Dr. Cristil, it's pretty much his LIFE. It's what brings him happiness. But by all means, if it matters so 17ing much to you to know who caught a pass, then call up Stricklin and ask him to push Cristil out.

I enjoy listening to Cristil. I don't get hung up on what mistakes he makes, because I know I'm listening to history. He's the last of the old guard, and when he's gone there won't be another like him. It may make you happy, but it will be the end of an era. He's one of the great things MSU has going for it. I can't believe you people who want to show him the door. While we're at it, let's get rid of our cowbells too and change our mascot. Bulldogs are so 17ing yesterday.
