Until our AD makes a commitment to MBB it won't matter. How much NIL is dedicated to MBB? I've heard just over $4 million which is at bottom of SEC. Coincidentally, that's where this program has been 3 of last 4 years. New coach will need a point guard, big guys for rebounds. This along with a system that can work with recruits. To compete consistently the NIL probably should be around $8 million IMO. This would show a coach we are dedicated to supporting his mission to make Gamecock basketball relevant at minimum in SEC play.

I was listening to 107.5 yesterday on the way home from work and they said that the program NIL expenditure was something like $4.5 mil which was dead last in the conference. It doesnt matter who the coach is if the university and boosters dont do a better job of financially supporting the program. I dont think the spending should be increased to just the SEC average, I think it needs to be in the top 1/4 of the league given our programs futility over the last 30+ years.

Why would anyone follow this team?
If you mean paying attention to what’s happening, wanting them to be successful and hoping they will be, celebrating the wins and mourning the losses but moving on regardless, all the while being interested in what comes next, I guess it’s because we’re fans of the university of South Carolina?

Just personal preference; I find Pooh easier on perspective than Eyore.

Why should it be on the donors? NIL is a freaking joke. The teams that have the money all have a major uber-rich alum or some connection to the university. Who is that for Carolina? Until there is reform by the NCAA that sets players as employees, create a salary cap, and the school will pay the athletes, we will be uncompetitive in major sports. The "Indiana did it, why can't we?" narrative is bull crap. They got a huge injection of cash from Mark Cuban (the uber rich billionaire with a huge sport background) and we just don't have that person. This talking point is becoming obnoxious.

Understood.
You're following in the hope the team becomes a different team, i.e. new coach, new players, new outcomes.
My reference was for this particular team which has a dwindling following as evidenced by the crowd last night.

He turned Winthrop into a mainstay in the NCAAT. They had never been before he got there. They went 7 of 9 years he was there. Have only been 4 times in the 20 years since he left.

194-83 at Winthrop, followed up by 331-121 at Wichita State

For us to get a guy that knows what their doing to clean up this mess, you will have to hire a guy with some baggage, take the bad with the good, Marshall is a guy that could fix us, and no one wants, so maybe he is in our spending bracket now, that no one wants him because of his baggage?

Marshall may be a jerk. I dunno. Guess he said some mean stuff to players at WSU. Don't care about all that. He didn't cover up sexual assault or anything.

Yes, they won a national championship, but what did that huge injection of cash actually do for Indiana? Specifically.

Women’s basketball should be among the last priorities of a serious athletic department.
So, if we shut down the women's basketball program, will that show everyone how serious our athletic department is?

All valid points. But I still say more NIL $ will be needed for anybody to get things back on track.

Well from all acocunts Coach Paris is a super nice person, that does not seem to be working, why not go the other way, LOL
A coach being loved by players (while they are still his players) seems to be the kiss of death for having a winning record, at least with us.

It begs the question: do we have the financial wherewithal to commit to NIL in football AND basketball?

I think a coach like Marshall makes some sense b/c he's shown he can win with less. For whatever baggage he brings, he can flat-out coach. I'd take well-coached 3* over poorly coached 4*.

They literally spent over $21 million to build a roster of players that won a national championship. Are we that dense?

I also think Marshall makes sense because we don't have the money for a big hire. He's a proven winner that we would be able to get from the bargain bin. That fits with our fiscal situation.

I believe he's living in Charleston.

On the negative PR of hiring him, I think it would be minimal. If a prominent program hired him, there would be big media coverage. But we're an absolute nobody. I think it would get a passing mention in the media.

And that's probably being too generous. We are less than an afterthought in MBB right now.

Some have said we wouldn't be able to handle the negative press, but I really don't think there would be that much b/c nobody cares about us.

We'd certainly have negative recruiting, but that's where Marshall's ability to coach the game would come into play by winning with lesser talent. If he put together a nice season or two, the negative recruiting wouldn't matter.

A serious athletic program wouldn't extend a Men's Basketball Coach for making the NCAA Tournament one time and have to pay him 12.5 Million to go away. I don't get the scapegoating of the one program that makes people feel good around here. We can have Coach Dawn work for free and it wouldn't heal the problems of our Men's programs.

Actually, I wouldn't be opposed to that. Yes, he exhibited Anger Management issues in Wichita, but he has won everywhere he has gone. It's a bit of a concern that he has been out of the coaching loop for awhile, but he should at least get an interview.

The only issue with this is that the Indiana Football program does not outspend us. IU gets players that fit their scheme and are coachable. They are not out there spending like a Miami or a Texas A&M. Whining about money gets us nowhere. Need to focus more on Return on Investment around here.

I don't really see a downside. He's won 72% of his career games. Is there any other coach we could reasonably hire who has won at that level? Him being out of the game, I think, could work in our favor from the cost perspective. We could probably pick him up dirt cheap.

Maybe he doesn't want to coach again. I guess he's getting some kind of payments from WSU. Could be he's happy to ride things out in Charleston, getting paid for doing nothing. Or maybe he wants a shot at redemption.

Worst case scenario, we give it 2-3 years and it doesn't seem to be working and we're right back where we are right now.

You're right, of course,. but there was downright panic by quite a few posters on here during that season that we needed to do something quick to lock Paris up before someone else swooped in to take him away.

If Bruce Pearl can be hired by Auburn, that pretty well proves that a coach's reputation is meaningless. Unless a coach is a convicted child molester, if he is a good coach, some college will hire him. I'd wager 90+% of the general public have no idea who Marshall is.

Look at Rush Propst, it would be hard to find a sleazier individual but he is still coaching HS football.

That mindset seems to be SOP around South Carolina athletics. Beamer had two unexpected big wins in 2022 and the AD threw millions of dollars at him even though no other program had shown any interest at all. He got another big raise after the 2024 season, again, no other program had shown any interest in hiring him.

I suppose we suffer from a bit of an inferiority complex. For Paris, some of our fans were absolutely flipping out that Tanner had not negotiated an extension/raise DURING the season. They were adamant we'd lose him if we waited until the season was over.

My opinion was to wait and see how the NCAAT shook out.

Agreed. Alumni bases will not be equal in spending, so we'll always be lopsided.

And we dont have a Cuban level donor.

I dont understand the continued (attempted) narrative that he didn't buy players when he openly admits it.

Our hope is what you said, players become employees, salary cap, etc. We cant compete with billionaires.

I don’t see anywhere that we’ve spent anywhere near $20 million on the roster last year. I’m all for searching for the best ROI. I think my biggest complaint is the reliance on donors to front the bill.

Buy who Lurker. If you don't have names, what are we talking about. Was Indiana in the Jordan Seaton sweepstakes? No. Any rich guy can puff their chest out and take credit after a team wins a National Championship. However, the only tangible evidence out there is Cuban is on their donor list. IU is not going out throwing around cash to 4 and 5 star players.

Well, I have your assertion vs quotes from Cuban himself. Given your stunning lack of credibility, ill go with Cuban.

My feeling was, let him put two good seasons together, then, talk about a raise. People acted like he made to the Final Four in '23-'24, we lost in the first round. He won 11 games in the '22-'23 season, 26 games in '23-'24, if he had put together another 20+ win season in '24-'25, then, yes, a raise was in order.

The 20 million number usually comes from the NCAA settlement that went through last year.

Each school can spend 20 million on athletes, but each school breaks it up differently between sports.
