I never voted for President Obama, have not liked the general direction he has taken us, but I would easily mourn his passing. I'm just a little ashamed collectively of us tonight.

I've been talking about this with my friends over the last few weeks. I feel like a lot of respect or reverence for those in such positions has decayed recently. I think it started with Clinton, intensified with G.W. Bush, and then went to another level with Obama. I miss the days when we held the offices in the highest regard. Not a fan of Scalia, but our court was stronger with his voice involved. To me, today is a sad day indeed.

That is the problem, most everyone anymore is spiteful and cannot have rational discussion without name calling and hate. I didn't vote for President Clinton, but I certainly don't "hate" the man. He actually did things I agreed with and he was my President. I didn't vote for President Obama either and don't "hate" him. No matter how much I disagree with political people, I try to keep in mind they are doing what they truly believe is the right thing. They work hard, harder than I'll ever work.

I was having this discussion with my 85 year old father who is retired military. He keeps asking what is really going even though he follows things as best as the press will allow. My explanation is to compare where we are now to where we were 40 years ago as far as values. It is safe to say that even those who are "conservative" today are not nearly as conservative as many 40 years ago - without going into detail, the list could be quite long. Now consider how far to the left we have moved in the last few years and in doing so we moved the conservative group further left as well but not nearly as far but the gap is much bigger. Along with that move and yes it has increased greatly with this administration there seems to be less tolerance.

I was a 4th grader when JFK was killed and always considered myself a democrat for some reason but over the years what was a JFK democrat looks closer to a modern day conservative. I think to further push us over the edge is the outright "in our face" style of politics that has been more the forefront lately that is very idealistic driven for the minority groups (note I didn't say minorities) but leaves the masses wondering what is going on.

I agree Spartan, we are in trouble as a nation if this our level of civility. The only thing I can't agree with you on is mourning Obama. I wouldn't celebrate but I don't think I could mourn for him.

My sense is that respect for the Presidency died when Nixon exited the Rose Garden in a helicopter.

Definitely agree with the OP. Scalia's passing is sad, in that he served our country in a position of high importance. He and I wouldn't have agreed on much of anything, but I understand that his contributions to modern day society exceed my paltry musings.

I am continously alarmed by the increased discourse in America. Not only in politics, but even in fans of teams. People are not to be thrown away like last years cell phone.
