I feel a parallel to 1980 here...

In 1980 State was 4-1 to start the season (including a win over Tech in Starkville) and only a 7-point road loss to Florida to start the season. USM was coming to Scott Field for homecoming and no one was giving the Golden Eagles a chance against the Bulldogs' high powered offense and stifling defense. Southern then went out and pasted a 42-14 shellacking on the Dogs that I remembered left everyone there puzzled.<div>
</div><div>The seniors of that team got together afterwards and had a true "find your desire" moment - then went out and rolled through the rest of the schedule (Miami, Auburn, Bama [then #1], LSU, and the Bears). The only other loss of the season was yo Nebraska in the Sun Bowl.</div><div>
</div><div>I'm hoping what we saw Saturday was the "find your desire" moment in this year's season. I recognize one of the big differences here is that we had to play two of the toughest opponents early in the season rather then later. I wonder if there is anyone on the squad now who wants to reach up there again. We will see if someone on this team can create that.</div><div>

We had so much more talent (especially on defense) back in 1980 than we do nowthat the teams can't even be compared. Despite that loss to USM,we still played the entire season with "relentless effort". This year's team doesn't know what that even means. The 1980 team knew how to tackle. This team couldn'ttackle a WAC running back. We haven't even gotten to the real RB's in our schedulelike Crowell, Lattimore, and Richardson. Bama is going to roll us so bad it's going to be really ugly. Nickoe Whitley is the only player in our secondary that can actually tackle. The rest of them practically run away from contact or give some half-assed effort at it. I hope that Mullen or Wilson chewed *** after that game and didn't pat our players on the back. They needed an ***-chewing as did Les Koenning. Pitiful play-calling. Hey, Les. Ever hear of rolling your qb out of the pocket with a run/pass option? Look into it.
