Golding is "permanent" for the playoffs only. I'm ready to see what his contract says. It's funny because they cancelled the press conference for him which is where they usually release the contract details. So my theory that I had on Sunday in a group text is gaining traction.

My Ole Miss contact is saying he is the guy, he has been spot on about how this thing has unfolded to date. That being said, I wouldn't put anything past that administration. My question would be, what is the long game, who do they bring it after the coaching carousal has been spinning for weeks?

I mean.. one could hear the rumor out of Oxford that Golding was offered the position as interim and he turned it down so they came back to him later that night and told him they would make the position permanent and it’s the only way he was guaranteed to stay.

Your theory is plausible. Carter is taking a breather to let things settle down. Too chaotic at the moment to make sound decisions. Golding will NOT be the long-term solution.

Ole Miss was terrified that they would get "Florida State-d" by the committee for losing their entire staff before the CFP selection. I think it is entirely possible that they will wait a year when the cycle is less chaotic, but I wouldn't be surprised if they're quietly working the phones to see who's interested. The problem is, unless they poach a P4 coach (like we did with Leach), there are no no-brainers left.

I think “permanent” means 1-3 years. Dint see him lasting longer than that. But he’ll be their coach next fall.

Plausible. They aren't going to be able to draw a satisfactory name this year so they might as well try to soothe their rioting fanbase by acting like Golding is THE guy. He's the guy for now while they take a few beats to see who else is an option.

Neal had said w/Cross interview on Super Talk that contract may be disclosed today at presser but Carter came out and said media coverage would be cancelled today because Golding didn’t want to distract from this team.

I had similar thoughts on Sunday and they still linger. I assume that his contract is very Arnettesque, so that Ole Miss fire him with a minimal buyout next season or after the CFP if the ideal candidate emerges.

He's as permanent as his buyout clause says he is. I'm interested to see if they got him to sign something low or if he knew he had them by the balls and could negotiate something far higher than his experience commands.

To me it was about class and playoff. But they are so far behind. If he isn't guys can hit the portal. But with lane taking most of the offensive staff I don't see them keeping a lot of their high profile recruits at least on offense. Of course there is speculation that weis may come back too.

He'll probably get 2-3 years which allows their boosters to catch a breath. Looking back, you can see a pattern where they spend a ton of money for a period of time and then lay off for a few years. There's no way they can raise similar amount of funds like LSU, Florida, A&M, etc. year after year. Their alumni base is much smaller than the top teams in the SEC. Instead, it looks like save up and try to go all-in for a short amount of time hoping they strike gold.

If they do this, I think they open up a new portal window for their players when they hire the replacement. THey'd have to feel really good about whoever was coming in.

I think this is going to be something more like Matt Luke. The buyout is not going to stop them from getting rid of him in a year if he's bad, but it's probably not going to be something they are in a rush to pay. And Golding actually has the resume to be a legitimate head coach candidate for a lower tier P4 school. He was DC at Bama for 5 years and now at Ole Miss, opposite an offensive head coach for 3. Not sure he was on anybody's radar or not, but it's not like ARnett and Luke where somebody was obviously being promoted without the resume to justify it. I would assume his contract and buyout are probably going to be similar to Lebby's. Maybe a little easier to get out of, but probably not something that's seen as "free" in the context of college football.

I think you’re right. I expect they’ll retrench for a couple of years then hire a coach and try to make another big run.

He's the permanent coach, on an interim basis.

I suspect he coaches next season. Who else would they? Brian Kelly?

Wouldn’t it be great if they fired him after the playoffs and had to pay him a buyout of 80% of the remaining contract? That level of stupidity would warm my heart.

The legal intent is that all coaches agreed to a full season and post season. Contractually with penalty.

I’ve been thinking the same thing. They needed quick action before the CFP was announced last night. Didn’t want to be the only team without a coach. That wasn’t gonna get them very far. Maybe silently Interim-head coach. And also the portal thing. I agree with you. Gonna be interesting to see if he remains number one coach or goes back to DC with a nice raise.

As soon as he was announced, I posted that I wanted to see the contract. Been thinking it's short term from the start.

I’m sure they’re keeping their options open and haven’t ruled out a change after the playoffs.
But assuming they look halfway decent in the playoffs, win a game they should win easily, I feel like they’d definitely roll into next year with him.

I’m thinking you’re right. Called a traitor reb fan I’m friends with and an ex athlete there and he said Jeremiah Johnson is permanent. Run on sentence on purpose
