I have an uneasy feeling about this coaching search.

Its probably just the State fan in me but I hope we dont go with some small school coach that woos Strick in an interview. The fact is that we play the recruiting game as well as anyone and we MUST continue this or the program will go in the ******* quickly. Granted, we have to get a guy that demands more respect from his players and demands effort but the number one attribute in this coach has to be the ability to get great talent. State will always have to out-talent other teams. When we win it is because we have the better players. If we keep all committs and get Pollard we will be a fun team to watch and a borderline tourney team and if Arnett comes back we are a tourney team.

while I know Stans was probably on the downhill side of what he was ever going to accomplish at State, given he was definitely suffering from burnout, and while I also know that if we ever want to have the CHANCE to be a regular NCAA tourney team we've probably got to give somebody else a shot to build on what Stans started, I still also get an uneasy feeling about it all. Just saying that because so many of the SEC basketball programs who have replaced their basketball coaches recently thinking they were going to make an improvement actually ended up doing just the opposite. While realizing we HAD to make a change for our program to ever improve from where it currently is I fully realize there is still just as big a chance our program goes downhill if we don't make the right hire and I would hate to see that happen. As I've said before IMO letting Sherrill, Croom and Polk all go at the time they went were no brainers, this coaching change here does cause me to pause a little.

Why do we always have to out-talent other teams? We may have been able to get some talent (not near as much as some give us credit for) but it really only got us one good season that ended with a loss in the 2nd round of the tourney. It is tough to go anywhere in the tourney without good coaching. Sure, a recruiter like Scott Drew may get lucky every now and then, but it definitely is not the norm.

the search has only been going on 4 days and we have had contact and interest with alot of good coaches...but all of it is not going to be published on the internet or spoken about to the media...

I mean damn- we told a coach that is still coaching in the NCAA Tourney NO THANK YOU today- and his rep called us...his reputation wasnt what we were looking for...let things move along...we arent looking to hire a "name"...we are looking for the best fit for our philosophy at Miss State University

50 years old or older- aint happening
NCAA problems or rumored problems- aint happening

People were going nuts during the football hire- out came Dan Mullen...relax people...relax

My only selfish concern is that I could be proven a fool if whoever we showed stansbury the door for fails miserably. I wanted him gone for years and now that it has happened, I hope I was right. Just nervous about the hire plus I'm afraid we are about to have a slide anyway in our talent

Obviously it wouldn't beBoeheim, Calipari, Crean, Donovan, Gotfried, Izzo, Matta, Pitino, Ryan, Self, B Williams, or R Williams. None of those are going to call us up and offer to come, nor would we reject any of them.<div>
</div><div>That leaves:<div>Mick Cronin (Cincinnati)</div><div>Chris Mack (Xavier)</div><div>Scott Drew (Baylor)</div><div>John Groce (Ohio)</div><div>
</div></div><div>Mack and Groce are the only ones likely to seek out our job, and Mack seems to have a poor reputation.</div><div>
</div><div>This whole exercise is moot if you're just making this all up, which is probably pretty likely.</div>

Larry Templeton attitude about everything. MSU isn't a top 20 job, but it's a good enough job to get a good coach. The people we have running the show know what the hell they're doing. They will make a good hire. Some people just can't seem to let go of the old days when we literally couldn't get a coach to take the job so we hired Richard Williams and the 20 years with a small-minded AD. Those days are gone. Just let them go.</p>

It's a gamble, but probably one we needed to take. If you hang on to Bury for 3-4 more years and he makes the tourney once, you've just prolonged the same situation. 14 years was plenty of time. Bury had a 2 and a 3 seed in the early part of his career and did nothing to build on them. The attrition each and every year was just too much of a negative on his body of work.
