I have to admit that I find it interesting...

That Cecil Newton's confession hasn't really been picked up on in the national media. At least I don't see anything on it on ESPN.com or SportsIllustrated.com.

So far, the only place I've seen it is on the Atlanta tv station website. I'm not doubting it but I just figured it would be a pretty big bombshell.

Nobody cares about any secondary violations on our part. They only want to know whether or not Auburn messed up and "they" have decided that Auburn is clean until some big smoking gun shows up.

Now we esteemed folks here on SPS know that Cecil admitting soliciting to MSU is a violation and that makes Cam ineligible. But making that connection is still far too subtle for the talking heads.

this article says "A person told a reporter at WSB-TV that Newton Sr. said ..."

maybe the talking heads/wire services are actually trying to use due diligence, this time... riiiiiiight...

if he did admit toit, and MSU did report it to the conference, AU is screwed...

Outside of pissing of Auburn and other programs that offer "extra benefits", I don't really see a negative for MSU...

that by Slive giving his statement late on a Friday afternoon and Cecil's alledged admission late Friday night, it somewhat flies under the national radar.

There are lots of other things going on that cover this story up, college games Saturday and NFL on Sunday. I think in the next few days though that story will pick up steam.</p>

It's widely known that releasing info on a Friday afternoon is the best time. Bad news is always released then. For some reason, it's passed over because people are more focused on their weekend plans. Classic political move here, gentlemen.

ESPN, the SEC, Auburn, and even MSU is working to minimize and contain the damage. Everyone (except us!) has invested a lot in Cam Newton and want to see the return.

We just want to come out looking clean, and not damage our conference. I sincerely hope we at least did some good horse trading. If we get to keep our cowbells after this year then we'll know.

Yeah, they call it Grabage Day or Trash Day or something like that (according to an episode of the West Wing I saw).

I'm not sure it's the best move for something related to college football, because all the actual action happens on Saturday.

I respectfully disagree with this sentiment. If Cam Newton went to Auburn because his father was offered $200,000 then Auburn needs to be held accountable. I know I made an invidious inference that he was bought, but I am simply putting two and two together. We had a legitimate shot at a game changer in Cam and Auburn, tired of Nick Satan ruling their state, appears to have swooped in and bought him. We are at worst 8-1 right now with Newton and would be in solid contention for a BCS game and an SEC West championship. This horsetrading for cowbells is horseshit.

Two reasons I think: (1) ESPN is working on something bigger than just Cecil's admission. Schaad has been snooping around Auburn all week; they are going for broke and have been all over this since the very beginning. (2) Like any major news outlet, they do not want to acknowledge being "scooped" by a smaller market source.

If he had said that it would be all over the internet and TV. It doesn't matter that he said it on Friday evening. This is the biggest college football story going right now and if news like that was legit it wouldn't be overshadowed by any of this weekend's games.
