I just dove into a David Murray article...

for the first time in a month. Is it me or do you need 100% concentration to read one? It is the antithesis of easy reading. I used to enjoy his articles in the newspaper version of Dawgs Bite but for some reason - I have either become dumber or he is much more "wordy" in his articles.

8dog and I have emailed about this and he gave a great rendition of a Murray article. Pretty much all read like this. I thought it was dead on.

Some of us older dawgs--well, i hestitate to use such filfthy language when describing our ascent into old age ( or shall we call it "wisdom")--will remember a time in the not so distant past when the newspaper (yes, folks, there was a time before these fancy computers) version of the these articles was far more understandable than the overly verbose (or "wordy" for some of my brehtren from the Free State of Jones) diatribes of the present day.

Hey, Murray. First rule of journalism. Don't say in 100 words what can easily be said in 10.

I get very tired (almost as tired as I used to get when working offshore) when people write (even if the writing is good) and they use a lot (when I say a lot I am implying more than two or three times in a paragraph or sentence) of brackets to better explain (sometimes it can be helpful to fully understand what they are saying but sometimes it detracts from the sentence) their point of view.

I looked at it last night . Had to stop. It's easier to read an Organic Chemistry text book than his crap.

on how hard his articles are to understand. But that is so confusing that it's almost like he's blatantly doing it.

my subscription mainly because his writing has gotten terrible. It is wordy, and not with good cause but it seems wordy just to be wordy. I used to like some of his stuff but I honestly can't enjoy it now because I spend most of my time boggled by the unnecessary use of language. That is not journalism, it's ego.

This my first post on six pack but I was moved to register so that I could post a response to David Murray's writing style.

I've been struggling with Muarry's writing for years and too have considered canceling my subscription to Gene's Page for that reason alone. I'm so glad to know that I'm not just stupid and that others recognize that his articles are over-worded and full of too much of his own BS.

Before I cancelled, David was asking the board for suggestions. I said I would like to have a cliffs notes version of his articles. Of course the sheep didn't like that. I had quit reading his articles a long time ago and finally quit the site all together. The only thing the site has going for it is Steve, I think he does great work.

Needless to say, I haven't picked up a book of his in over 15 years.

Edit: I was. It was Herman Melville I was trying to think of with Moby Dick.

I love any discussion that dovetails into comparisons between Hemingway, Faulkner, and Melville. Great American authors FTW. If I had the energy I'd bust out a Cormac McCarthy style. Screw punctuation.

Oh yeah, Murray. Used to read his newspaper back in the day and enjoyed it. Don't know if his style has changed, but I haven't read anything by him in ages. I count myself lucky.

You're right, Steve is the only thing that keeps me on the premium board. Murray had me thinking that I could no longer read. I would have to re-read each and every line and even then, I was not sure what I had read.
