I just hope Greg has more sense than his daddy when hiring a FB coach...

The Cohen hire was universally praised (sans KB21) but let's be honest. It wasn't that hard of a hire. Cohen was falling over himself to get back to Starkville and all Byrne had to do was offer it and get the money right. A trained monkey could have made that hire.

This one is going to be different. While there are plenty of guys willing to move to Starkville for 2 mil a year, there is not a clear cut candidate like there was with baseball. (Thankfully there is also not an internal candidate for the MSU fanbase to attach itself to this time.) When faced with a coaching vacancy last year in College Station, certainly a much better job than the State job, Greg's daddy went out and hired Croom's old boss Mike Sherman, and halfway through season 1 fans are already screaming for his head. That happens when you are 2-5 with your only W's two close wins over pitiful teams and your losses against Arkansas State and three Big 12 losses in which you have given up almost 150 points.

There will be plenty of good candidates out there, and the MSU fanbase will have many different lines of thinking going into this search. I just hope that Greg does a little better job of finding the right man than his daddy did and making the new coach one that everyone can be unified behind.

If there is one thing that MSU fans are, they are slightly out of touch with college football and that is because of LT. Case in point, Jackie was hired in 91, which was basically the start of the "modern" SEC, the expansion and creation of divisions and consistent 8 game schedules. Basically Jackie is all we knew for that entire decade+. In typical MSU fashion, LT/we held on to him for 2-4 years too long because we were too scared to grow up. Then, when Jackie finally took it upon himself to force our hand, LT took the easy way out and royally flubbed the next hire. My point is, this isn't 1990 anymore. We have better facilities, we have a few years of success, and we play in the most successful and probably richest league in the NCAA. We CAN get a head coach.

to make the matter worse for daddy greg, he signed sherman to a SEVEN year contract, they would have to pay 11mil to dump the body this year, which wont happen but they could afford.

I have too wondered about this same thought when i saw shermans horrible start. I think he will get better there with recruiting but this year is horrible.

I think greg will be extra aggressive in this area because he does realize how important the next HC would be, and lets face it. greg is not going to be a lifer here, and in order for him to be crowned succesfull and be looked at for other jobs...this football program has to get turned around and quick.

...it's going to be an interesting process to watch. We obviously need somebody else, but people like Coach34 need to understand when it comes to hiring a coach, MState football does not equal Mstate baseball.

On a side note, I wonder if Croom had any input in Sherman's hiring.

I didn't say we couldn't get a head coach. I don't think one of the hottest young coaches in America will be salivating to come to Starkville like Cohen was. We can still get a good coach, but I doubt it will be the Chris Peterson or Mike Leach type name that gets thrown around on this board from time to time. A CUSA coach like Graham? Maybe yes. A coach who has his team in the top 15 in the country right now? Not a chance.

A&M has the money to hire whoever wants the bank. But, hiring Fran and Sherman are sending the Aggies back to 1981 (Pre Sherrill).

I would hope that G Byrne would not make the safe hire, but the right hire.

in defense of Mr. Byrne, it's too early to say for sure he's a bust. I just don't know enough about the situation he stepped into. He was a proven winner as an NFL coach and hiring coaches from the NFL seems to be working out pretty good most of the time (ours doesn't count because he was a position coach - Sherman was a head coach with a 57-39 career record). Like I said, I really don't get that hire either (and I especially don't get the 7-year contract), but on the front end, it didn't look like a terrible hire to me. And it still may not be that bad of a hire. But they could have done better.

Well according to Leach's contract, In August 2006, Leach signed a five-year contract with Texas Tech that will pay him at least $10 million if he stays in place through 2010. Leach's guaranteed compensation will be $1.6 million in 2006, $1.65 million in 2007, $1.75 million in 2008, $1.85 million in 2009 and $2.15 million in 2010.[1]

We would have to pay him 2.5 a year just to get him interested. I wouldnt think he would leave unless it was atleast 3 mil/year or around double his current contract.

Unless we are willing to throw some major cash down, we would need to look at some very small schools.

and with the money being close to equal there isn't really a good reason to leave Lubbock. We could probably have a shot at someone like Utah or Boise St or a coordinator from somewhere like Muschamp or a Division II head coach. We however shouldn't have to accept a career position coach of any kind.
