I just read an article that said Tenn. screwed up more than we thought

By rule, since LSU was leading by two points they should have been required to try the extra point. Then Tenn would have a chance to block the kick and score two and tie the game (remember the Snow Bowl?) However, since Tenn had abandoned the field and gone to the locker room the refs deemed the game to be over. Chances are the outcome would have remained the same, but who knows?

LSU could have just taken a knee on the try.

Absolutely correct. If Miles would have realized it was an option.
So, LSU wouldn't have taken a knee. I would guess the extra point would have been blocked, returned deep into LSU territory, inexplicably fumbled, and LSU would have scored a two-point conversion to win by 4.

No, Miles would've gone for 2 to make sure that a FG couldn't beat him with no time left on the clock. Jarrett Lee would've thrown a pick 6 (or pick 2 in that case), except UT would have a block in the back on the return to lose the game.

In college you are not required to try the extra point when you score with no time remaining. However, in the NFL you are. Trust me been on wrong side of this bet too many times to count to know this rule like the back of my hand.

Your scenario, only LSU was lined up in an illegal formation on the 2 point conversion try so the penalties offset and the try is replayed. This time Miles figures he'll kick it, just to be safe. The snap goes over the holder's head and is kicked around until a UT guy picks it up along the sideline and and runs it in for 2 points the other way. However, a 30 minute replay review ensues and the replay official determines the UT guy recovering the snap was out of bounds and the game is over with LSU winning. T-Bob & Co. hoist Miles on his shoulders and carry him to the locker room before he can do anything else to extend the game.

apparently, the refs went to the TN locker room to get them back out on the field.

Also a quick review of internet shows that no one really knows the concrete answer to this.

since there was only a 2-point lead. Then a minute later he announced that the conversion would not be attempted and the game was over. I got the impression that Tennessee had refused to come back on the field. So it appears that the rule is that as long as it could affect the outcome of the game, you're supposed to have to try the conversion (which makes sense).

It wasn't the end of the game, though. Trailing 16-3, the Dogs scored to make it 16-10 and kicked deep to Auburn. They stuffed Auburn and used their two remaining timeouts. Tubs opted for the intentional safety on the punt, the make the score 16-12. Prather got a decent return on the kick, and Matt Wyatt lead the team to a second TD to take the 18-16 lead. MSU was penalized for excessive celebration, resulting in a 15 yard penalty on the extra point (I guess they eventually changed that rule). Anyway, facing an extra point from the 18, the Dogs just took a knee and preserved the 2 point lead.

I remember that there was actually time left on the clock, but it was only enough for a kickoff and maybe one play. Better to keep the 2 point lead safe, as their only real shot was a long TD play.

Also, isn't the play over if the defense gains possesion on a try down in the NFL? So, the defense can't score on a try. Therefore, there would be no reason to force a try if the resulting score with no time remaining is a winning score.</font>
