I know it's been said before, but the job Hud has done at ULL is pretty amazing.

He's got them 6-1 and ranked #32 in the BCS. Other people around the country have even taken notice. I've seen 4 topics in the last 2 weeks about ULL on other forums, and people in LA are saying there is a buzz around Lafayette about the football team like never before. Looks like we miss Hud a lot more than Diaz, and I didn't call that at all.

but it certainly wouldn't make me upset if ULL could bring their program up to a level where LSU actually had to try with instate recruits. The Cajuns will never be on LSU's level, but if they could keep the Tigers honest and having to spend more time tying up the homefront, I see that as a good thing for Ole Miss and MSU.

LSU doesn't want anything with ULL recruits and ULL recruits are not on LSU's radar.

I think that Hud's best skill is being a Head Coach, which is what he has been for a good while other than his stint at State, and which is also why he took the first bus out of Starkville when offered a Head Coaching job. Not trying to start anything else up about the whole Mullen HC debate, but I think Mullen's best skill is being an Offensive Coordinator. I like Mullen and don't want anyone else leading our program right now, but I wish he would make more use of his best skill...calling plays.

but Hud and Mullen didn't exactly see eye-to-eye on a lot of things. Mullen didn't like Hud's opinions on offense and vice-versa. It wasn't the right mesh with personalities (maybe because both are type A, who knows). But I do find it odd that Hud wasn't even made the OC by Mullen, especially after he was given some consideration for HC. He gave that role to his boy toy Koenning, who is and always be a retread, ala Croom-McCorvey.

In looking at Koenning's background, it doesn't appear that their paths have crossed at any point in their coaching careers. Was Mullen simply looking for a "yes man" as OC?

Also, I find the following paragraph from Koenning's Wikipedia bio interesting, especially after the rumors swirled following the UAB game about Dan taking over the playcalling in the second half:
At Texas A&M, Koenning had called plays from the press box, and coach Dennis Franchione
could overrule them, which he did often. In November 2007, the Aggies
upset 13th-ranked Texas 38–30, and rumors have it that Franchione did
not overrule a single play. Koenning, however, refused to discuss the
matter.[1]
