I’m considering a vehicle trade for an EV.

We have a Cadillac XT4 in our life that I absolutely love. The screen, the physical buttons, the ride… everything about that little car. Love it.

I have the need to trade another vehicle soon and I’ve just sat in a new Cadillac Optiq at a dealership in Orlando and I really… REALLY.. like it for what we’ll use it for.

I think the only thing holding me back right now is that the GM EV’s have deleted Apple CarPlay. Otherwise, I might pull the trigger.

Do I lose all my SPS cred if I fold?

I’d imagine you could stay…. But you will constantly have your manhood challenged. Similar to cooking on pellet grill, driving an EV vehicle definitely makes you less of a man*****

No car play would be a deal breaker for me. As for EVs themselves, if they work for your driving needs, and you can afford them, why not. They would work for me for 95% of my driving, it's the other 5%, and the premium you have to pay over ICE, that make them a no go for me.

I think you forgot to put your pronouns in your post...

Seriously though, I've thought about going that route.

My suggestion, go buy a diesel. Delete that B@$&’ so you don’t deal with the Bulls”@& DEF refills and restrictions. Then burn that baby down every time you can!! Black smoke salute to EVs at every red light!! Ha ha ha

Are you sure you know how to virtue signal properly? You must be able to do this if you have an EV.

I'm disappointed in you. **

Seriously, depending on need, it could be a good vehicle for you. But like L4Dawg said, no CarPlay would be a deal breaker for me.

You lose "cred" if you base car purchases on having or not having Apple CarPlay
CarPlay is extremely useful and user friendly for anyone who has to talk, text, or use maps while driving. It's by far the most seamless and well-integrated. Why would someone not take that into consideration?

And it's an absolutely boneheaded move by GM and Tesla to discontinue their use.

I’m pretty sure that’s what my butler drives. He’s a big fan. Says it’s actually a better “experience” than the Mercedes e-class sedan he used to drive. I’ll ask him any specific questions you might have when I return home from the club.

I told my wife i wanted a Prius (just for the gas mileage we live so far from everything) she told me she wasn't' riding in a damn shoe! After a big argument we are headed to Dallas to get an XT5 Caddy.

My wife owns a Tesla Model S. We live in the Memphis area and she works downtown. She never has to stop for gas. We just charge at home as needed. The car has been great if you're just driving around town and commuting 20-30 minutes every day. We have 48K miles and it is 4 years old. It has never been in the shop for any type of maintenance. It would charge to a max milage of 398 miles, but now only goes to 340. You don't really get that milage out of the car. It is probably about half.

Traveling with the car is very easy. It does add a lot of time to any extended trip. A 3-4 hour drive will add about 1 hour to the trip. A 8-10 hour drive will add at least 2 hours of charging. We typically plan meals around charging, but we typically take the gas vehicle for longer trips.

Now tires have been a different story. I think she is on the 3rd or set of tires. It's not the car's fault, she has probably hit every curb in a 5 mile radius. The car does not have a spare, and did require a tow once.

I drive a 2016 Tundra. I will not advocate for another electric car, maybe a plug-in hybrid.

I agree. I’m old and technologically challenged is being kind to describe my abilities but CarPlay is equivalent to adaptive cruise or collision advoidance braking. Why would you build a vehicle without it.

That's the 5th largest auto maker in the world and the top e-auto maker in the world that disagree, they must see something different. I thinking their reasoning is its probably a safety/liability thing. I've got a 7 year old GM truck and you can't turn on blue tooth while its in DRIVE, you have to stop and put it in park otherwise a message pops up on the screen. Plus, they'd rather you use their in-house software I'm sure, which could come with its own liability......who knows but if they thought it was going to hurt sales I don't see them discontinuing it otherwise

No CP/AA sounds pretty terrible, simply because that means you are now using GM/Caddy's own infotainment software and I just dont view GM/Caddy as a software company.

Maybe their integration is spot on perfect...I use Apple CarPlay thru a wireless dongle so I dont have experience with the finer things in life.

I read about GM killing CP/AA in their EVs a couple year or two ago...they claimed their system would be able to prioritize how the vehicle's battery would be utilized and ensure charging stations would be prioritized when creating map routes for driving. Thats neat and all...but CP/AA has been so flawless for me over the last 8 years and multiple versions that it seems a bit risky.

I could see car companies charging for people to have access to their proprietary infotainment and navigation. If that is the case or ever becomes the case...17 that.

There's no way in hell I'm buying an EV off the lot. Take a look at the Lyric. Someone was saying you can get a gently used one for cheap.

I’ve thought about it.. but it’s a lot bigger vehicle than I want and you don’t get the $7,500 rebate when buying used.

Real men don't care what other's think and do what they like. I got me an EV and it's the best car I have ever owned and it's not close.

If you are looking for luxury and performance and $$$ aren't your primary concern then Tesla is hard to beat for any car maker.

I went Hyundai as I was looking at overall cost of ownership and the performance is not shabby. The Ioniq line of EV's from Hyundai are my choice as there is a dealer in Tupelo and had the longest battery range when I purchased mine - Tesla dealer? not close to me

If you are serious, you will want to talk with someone that owns one as things are different but 200 moving parts in an EV vs 2000 in an ICE is a game changer for me. I have been broken down from fuel pumps, water pumps, ..... list goes on and on for an ICE. Then they save money on a monthly basis... less cost of fuel and maintenance.

Plan to charge at home, 50 amp gets 9.4 KWH charge rate with the right charger and cost way less at home. At home a KWH is 10.87 cents vs 42 cents commercially.

Good luck, people really don't care what you do, they just are afraid of them as they aren't informed.

Backing off the humblebrag that quickly? **

(Seriously, go with what works for you.)
That’s kind of where I’m at with it.. no gas, no oil changes and it fits how we would use it.

But man.. I’ve got a lot of sweat equity tied up in teaching her how Google maps ties in with CarPlay and how you can text pins and save favorite locations. And just thinking about all the lessons on how podcasts and Apple Music work…

… I don’t know if I’ve got it in me to start from scratch.

….you make a strong case for and against….
and my opinion isn't changing

If you really want my opinion on EVs. We will probably all drive EVs eventually. However, I hope that we solve some of the battery issues first. Like I'm not crazy about the mining in the Congo and I realize cobalt is used in other items I use but I have an option driving a gas car. Second when you are powering an EV from a coal power plant are we really saving world.

Having said all of that if you want an EV drive an EV.

My payback has been 104,000 miles in 2.5 years. No oil changes. Operating cost per mile is significantly cheaper than gas. Best car I've ever owned and it's not close.
