Brandon Woodruff is probably going to be a dual position guy for us. He pitched in US Army All-American game at Wrigley Field, and I think he will be a closer for us. He can also play in the outfield as a corner outfielder for us as well.
Trevor Fitts and Jacob Lindgren are probably going to be weekend starters for us in the near future. Fitts was the 6A Alabama pitcher of the year as a junior. Lindgren pitches for St. Stanislaus, and he is a LH pitcher that can throw in the low 90's. He did have an injury at the end of the year last year, so that is something that bears watching.
Jonathan Holder is another player that I like. He is 6'3" and is a first baseman/DH type. Holder can also pitch as well, but he's more of a middle relief guy. I think his greatest impact will be as a position player, and he and Wes Rea will fight over who will play first, and who will DH the next couple of years.
Everyone knows that I love Will Cox. He is 6'4", and throws in the upper 80's and is a workhorse. He was one of only a couple of juniors that made the All-State team last year, and is very projectable. I think he could be a Sunday/midweek starter during his junior/senior years. Very, very competitive player.
Then we signed a couple of infield guys like Philip Casey and Matthew Britton. Britton has some pretty good speed, and it looks like he has a little bit of power. Casey looks more like a corner infielder to me. I think both will be role players to start out with and may start by the time they are seniors.
Tyler Fullerton has a lot of speed and he is a leadoff type of hitter. But again, I think he will be a role player and start his senior year- especially with CT Bradford around.
Finally, there's Mitch Slauter, a JUCO catcher from Kansas. I think he will be another catcher to give us some depth because we are going to lose Cody Freeman and Wes Thigpen after this year. Personally, I think Hunter Renfroe will be our starting catcher in a year or so after Freeman and Thigpen graduate, but it's always good to have another catcher because of the physical demands of the position.
Now, as far as next years recruiting class- we are off to a great start by getting a commitment for Daniel Garner from Sparkman HS. He is another power hitting catcher and he has won a couple of home run derbies already. He is a guy that could crack the lineup as a freshman DH/catcher with Renfroe in a couple of years, and then we have Jacob Schempert from Houston high school in Mississippi, and I expect us to sign Myles Gentryfrom Gulfport before too long- probably in the spring. Anthony Alford is the top baseball prospect in the state as far as juniors, but he has a knee injury from playing football, and I wouldn't be surprised to see his stock drop because of that unil he proves that he is healthy. I know that MSU is also looking at Curt Chism at Madison Central as well.
Back to this class- we'll see who they sign in the spring. I am keeping my eye on Patrick Barnes of Clinton, who committed to Meridian CC. He is a middle infielder who missed a lot of last year with a blood clot, but he is healthy now. But, just like Hunter Renfroe last year, there will be somebody that no one knows about just yet that will burst on the scene.
