Not sure how workable and almost surely unpopular but here goes......The American flag is flown everywhere. Your individual state flag can be flown within the confines of your state but nowhere else.....keep in mind this is in public....other than that no flags flown whatsoever.......sorry rainbow coalition...I can't fly my WV flag that looks like Old Glory anymore.....no gay pride flags..and yes, no Christian flags either (addressing the recent controversy)......let's take this politically correct thing one step further......there can be no more nick names......no WVU Mountaineers (might offend the valley people).....no Virginia Tech Hokies (might offend the chicken farmers)...no Marshall Stumbling Herd (might offend everybody[banana]).......no more mascots.....the mountaineer shooting the musket would instantly piss off half the country......if we take away everything then there's nothing to be politically correct about anymore and we can all breathe a little easier.....except for the lawyers who are making a killing off of all of this.......just a random thought this Sunday morning

You know, I think I am way better off , if I don't think about it. If the majority wants an odorless and colorless world that is devoid of one's expressions then so be it. One opinion broadcast instantly around the world can be great or it can result in the lemmings going off the cliff , never to react to an instant message again.
Answer this.....how many British flags were flown in the US after the Revolutionary War? If there were any, how many of those people were ridiculed (or worse)? Did they deserve it (if they flew it)?
I guess my point, and stance, during this entire thing is not about race. It's about national pride. It is a slap in the United States face to fly the Confederate Flag. I've heard people claiming "race race race....KKK.....racism.....skinhead....racism....blah blah blah" and saying that these racist carry this flag thus it's racist. Well, some of these racist also carry the US flag and they use and preach from the Bible. So....ban those?
I'm glad the flag is down. I'd support banning it completely except for private property and museums. I'd also permit it in any cemetery where a Confederate soldiers may be buried. Other than that, it has no place here.
And your example of team mascots is very lame. These teams didn't try to kill each other and break away from a nation.
I think comparing the confederacy to the british ignores a slight difference in the two situations. The US fought to be independant from the British and won. The confederacy fought to be free from the union and lost. There were differences of opinions that led to the civil war and while we all view those differences the way we do today doesn't change what the people back then fought for whether they were right or wrong. A lot of Americans in the south have family who died for the confederacy. I have no problem with them honoring their family. The problem with the confederate flag now is that so many racist groups have stolen the symbolism that the flag is offensive to many people and that is why it is politically incorrect to fly the flag today. It has very little to do with honoring the South.
The appropriate analogy would be if the US lost the War of Independence against Britian and yet some kept flying the US flag. Would Britian have tolerated that?
And I think you're underestimating the racism associated with the Confederate flag before racist groups appropriated it. Don't forget, the Confederacy itself was a racist group.
I wouldn't be surprised if it was even higher than that. No doubt that by todays standard almost everyone back then was racist, although the ones that wanted to permit slavery take it to a whole other level. But yes, it's not simply a matter of, one side was racist and the other was not so we have to get rid of the flag of the side that was racist.
But the other guy was talking like, the racist stuff only got tagged onto the flag later, as if the original disagreement in the 1860s only involved a disagreement in political policy. First of all, even if that were the case then taking a disagreement in policy to the level of secession is traitorous and secondly the South was more racist all along and trying before even taking into account they tried to secede over slavery.
Without getting into how the South is today regarding racism, look at the 100 years after the end of the Civil War. It's not like the South went from wanting to keep slaves straight into racial equality. The Confederate flag we're all haggling over was returned to the state capitol in South Carolina in 1961 specifically as a response to the Fed Gov't trying to end integration. And we get all this "But the flag is heritage" stuff. Racism is an inherent part of that heritage, over and above whatever racism there was in the rest of society at any given point in time.
The flag is gone from the state grounds of SC now and my bet is that over time it will look more and more ridiculous that it stayed up for that long. Twenty years from now people aren't going to say "Can you believe they won't allow the Confederate flag to fly on state grounds, how ridiculous" but rather will say "Can you believe the Confederate flag flew on state grounds all the way up to 2015, how ridiculous."
Umm. What does Britain have to do with anything? America was not formed as a monarch. It is a constitutional republic and the south has representation like everyone else. They also have free speech. I think little race baiting trolls love to talk about anything they can link to racism so i am not surprised you cant see past racism.
The flag debate has been going on for decades. It just took a crazy racist committing acts of violence for it to come out mainstream finally. If you think this movement just sprung up over the past 3-4 weeks, then you are wearing blinders man. And Dave, from what I've read from you, you are smarter than that. Race baiting or not, fact is that the flag should have been down. The fact that South Carolina put it up to protest desegregation and equality shows what the flag was intended in that state to represent....
Now, what about Mississippi? Isn't the flag part of their state flag? I've not hear much about that.
Not sure where i ever suggested the debate just started but it did flame up when race baiters jumped on it because one crazy killer shot up a church. In reality what changed in the last month in regards to race relations other than one persom committing a mass murder?
