The hive mind in college athletics especially when it comes to hiring head coaches is one of the purest examples of groupthink in American sports. It directly explains why so many programs refuse to run niche underdog friendly systems even when those systems would give them more of a realistic chance to win. The hive mind would rather lose respectably doing what everyone else does than win “the wrong way.” The hive mindset in college basketball is the worst and most prevalent of all, because the sport is smaller, cheaper, and easier to copy.

I love that we talk about wasting money on a sport that’s 4 years removed from a national title, all while we’re paying $1M per win to a football coach that spent another near seven figures on a 3rd string QB that’s been riding the pine all year
