So, about 10 minutes after my new church voted me in as the new pastor (in Pennsylvania, which I guess I need to do a whole new post about), my wife was I gotta step outside, can you take our daughter to the bathroom? (which I hate carrying her to the men's room, which I guess I need to do a whole new post about). My wife was like the bathroom is over there (she has a much better sense of direction than I do, which I guess I need to do a whole new post about). Anyway, I can't find this elusive bathroom (which I guess I need to make a whole new post about) and my daughter is at the 4 year old stage in which she does not want to go potty but instead goes in her panties (which I guess I need to do a whole new post about), so I am picking her up, trying to find this elusive bathroom, and I don't see a step that I have no idea why it's there. I trip over the step and I realize I am going down, so I instinctvily protect my daughter and turn where I take all the brunt of the fall and she is unharmed (which I guess I need to do a whole new post about) and now I my shlulder is killing me.

All of this to say, I am curious, do you guys go to a doctor when you are badly hurt like this or do you see it as a waste of time and try to tough it out?

I put volraren gel on it, then ice. The next day I check for range of motion, then no matter what, I don’t go to the doctor.

Yes, you see a doctor and have whatever scanning done that needs to be done.
Then you go to a PT if needed and work with the PT to set a schedule for you to repair whatever is damaged, if it's severe enough. You then show up for the appointments and do the work at home that is needed to improve.

- What you don't do is let it heal poorly which prolongs pain or limits mobility moving forward, due to doing nothing right now.
- What you don't do is visit a chiropractor instead of a Physical Therapist because you figure they both work with mobility issues, so they are equal in worth. They are not. One deals in reality and the other thrives on vibes.


You have a 4 year old. Always be proactive and address anything that may limit your mobility or comfort when she is 14 or 24. You want to easily play catch or shoot hoops with her as a teen. You want to easily sit on uncomfortable bleachers and chairs to see her do whatever she enjoys doing.

I've had back, knee, sinus, eye & shoulder surgery. The shoulder was by far the worst & the most difficult to recover. I would see a Dr if it hurts that bad. It'll just get worst & harder to recover if a procedure is required.

I know older men at civic clubs that have had shoulder and knee surgeries the past few years. I'm sure I'm headed that way sooner or later for both, but PT within a couple of days of surgery has helped these men recoup faster than I ever thought could happen.

Get it checked out, do the physical therapy if there is any. Everything you injure and ignore causes problems as you age.

I tore my rotator cuff on December 17th. I finally went to the doctor last week and my wife literally manages an orthopedic clinic. Rub some dirt on it. Drink some water. Take 800 mg of ibuprofen and have it checked out in mid-May if it still hurts.

Have had several types of surgery but rotator last July, still feeling It. Much better but it takes lots of time to recover. Don’t plan on doing a thing all Summer but doctor told me shoulder replacement is easier Recovery.

And that is why I won’t have surgery on mine unless I absolutely have to. That was my doctor’s advice.

For all you that are NOT currently injured, I’d recommend you get on a good stretching program as you age. Call it whatever you want, but loosening up all the tight areas can ward off a lot of things.

Also, strength train and keep the gut off - as always.

I’m a veteran of 2 rotator cuff surgeries. Give it a couple of days with the Voltaren & ibuprofen & see if it heals in its own unless it’s obvious you’ve really done something. Then see an orthopedic dr if you’re still having trouble. Remember they can be quick to recommend surgery. If it’s not giving you too much trouble ask for physical therapy & see if that helps. I actually have a small rotator cuff tear in left shoulder too. Dr wanted to operate. I went to a few months of pt & got it to the point it doesn’t really bother me. If you do have a tear, only you can decide if you really need surgery. But if it’s impacting your life, I’d recommend the surgery. Good luck.

This is absolutely not a flex. You should be going at least once a year for an annual wellness and that should've started in your 20s to keep track of your levels on everything.

I'd go get it checked out after past experience of letting my ego get in the way on a shoulder injury. If nothing else they'll tell you what not to do to allow your body to heal and not make things worse.

I only have a pressure pill I have to take each morning but I put it with my vitamin and fish oil and such. Easy to remember to take all of them with pillbox

Thread hijack, but what is the deal with chiropractors. I had a physical therapist tell me one time that good ones are good for manipulation and bad ones think they can cure heart disease by getting the hips back in alignment or whatever.

Yup. you are at the age where you should go to the doctor. Should probably be getting a baseline of a bunch of stuff to keep an eye on as you get older. Get your colonoscopy at the very least. Virtually completely preventable cancer but if that doesn't move the needle, think about how bad it would be having to know you need a colostomy bag only because you delayed going to the doctor.

Lots of things are over diagnosed and over prescribed. But still go to the doctor. You can just not take statins or blood pressure medication if they prescribe them. But I'm pretty sure a colonoscopy and calcium score are not causing people to get unnecessary treatments.

I have hypothyroidism, so if I didnt go to the doctor to find that out, I would have cold toes and fingers, struggle with weight, and struggle with energy. Like 25micrograms of...something...and none of those very annoying issues is an issue.
I hate having a pill box and was oddly proud of not having any medication into my 40s, but I am more happy to have energy, be a healthy weight, and not have cold toes.

The drawback is the Dr gives me some small amount of a statin because my LDL is acceptable, but on the higher end of acceptable. I have yet to notice a side effect from the statin, so it seems like an easy thing to do- I take something minimal that has no downside and the potential upside is reducing the chance for a serious health event.

I was in medicine for over 40 years. Waking up dead would be a blessing compared to some of the docs I saw.

Honestly, if my LDL was on the high end of acceptable, there's no way I'd take statins. Same with BP. if it's borderline or even slightly high, the meds will cause more side effects than do good. I'm on low dose BP as it is and it and moderate exercise gets it down to 130/80. My Dr. is good with that and so am I.
