I was making an excuse for this team.

I was making an excuse for this team. Considering Ole Miss lost two first round picks, a third rounder and a seventh rounder to the NFL after 2008, I was thinking that we would be about as good as their 2009 team. I thought we were overrated this year as they were in 2009 but this is worse. While they were overrated and had a cupcake schedule they still got 8 wins and a Cotton Bowl win. I thought since our schedule was more difficult we would get 6 or 7 wins and a bowl still. We, however, took a tremendous dive. The quality of our players on average has dropped enormously. We simply have very few SEC quality players. We are weak and slow and in some facets poorly coached and unprepared. I still think Mullen is an above average coach, however the team lacks the swagger of teams from the past two years. Our recruiting of quality players is not there either.

How do we correct this player quality issue?

Am I the only one who thinks Mullen looks lost/slightly overwhelmed?

If Carmon and Tobias Smith don't go down, we're probably no worse than 3-2 right now.

To fix it- yes, it goes back to recruiting, but it's actually more simple than a lot of people think. Actually recruit o-linemen. The years where we only brought in one or two is killing us right now big time.

We're replacing seniors with redshirt freshman as their back-ups.

Croom messed up by not bringing in more during his tenure, and Dan messed up by not bringing in more JUCO o-linemen to try to solve the depth issues. All it would have taken is 2-3 the past two years or so.

Some truth but I'm not convinced we beat UGA with Tobias and Carmon.

Surely Mullen is smart enough to recruit Olinemen. I have not looked to see but the is a no brainer. Lineman on both sides are more important than the skill guys on both sides. Clearly. The coaches have to see this ****. I was thinking 6-7 wins because of some of these reasons but we truly look horrible even against a mediocre team like La Tech.

I am, as you probably know, an Ole Miss fan. But I think you're absolutely right. The needs of a college football team vary based on your conference affiliation. In the SEC, there are two things you absolutely must have (in my opinion): a solid OL and a good-to-great front 7 on defense. Any form of attrition whether due to injury, graduation, or the NFL draft that affects these positions is clearly a huge blow.

MSU started the season in a hole, in my opinion. You lost McPhee and the two LBs, which I though was absolutely enormous. You don't simply replace that type of production with inexperienced (albeit talented) replacements. No matter what you see or hear from preseason reports, you almost always see a dropoff. You also had replacements on the OL due to graduation or the NFL, which hurt from the jump. The injuries on the OL after the season started obviously complicated matters (though Carmon was going to be a serious liability at tackle, in my opinion, anyway).

I'm not trash-talking you here. My team is awful and I have no interest in debating which is the more screwed of two screwed teams. However, I think MSU has a very tough row to hoe with 3 losses and Alabama, Arkansas, and South Carolina left on the schedule. I'm going to be really surprised if we see a bowl game this year involving a serious team from the state of MS. And that's quite distressing considering I expected to see 2 very minor bowl games from both teams. Ole Miss has deficiencies in almost every realm of the game. State has deficiencies at what I consider three of the more critical positions in our conference: OL, DE, and LB.

Yeah look at Bama last year. For them a rough year. They of course had freak talent on defense last year but the majority was 18-19 years old in the db's and lb's. Makes a huge difference. Florida was hit by it even worse.

I've never seen so much defensive talent on a college team as Alabama has right now. It's actually kind of scary.

Not all of us live and die with football. I don't trash talk as a rule. It's idiotic and pointless for me to brag about the accomplishments of others as if they are my own. Likewise, it's ridiculous to pretend that any failure by the MSU football team is somehow a failure on your part. But carry on being anal.

..I'm angry at Fresno State for losing.

If Fresno State wins, this remains a good morning in sixpackspeak.com land & we are not subjected to your ****** analysis of where things stand currently.

You could simply quit looking at my posts. But you won't, will you? Come on. We all know you won't. You don't have that kind of self-control. It's idiotic really, the complaining over having to read something that you're making an effort to read. Have a great day. I don't argue with those who don't consider logic to be a part of the premise of any conversation.
