If anything the A&M game dispelled any fears for whatever supposed "holes" we have in the secondary. After watching the game, I left still feeling unsure about our secondary because A&M had anywhere between 9 to 11 drops. But when I looked at the stat line of the game it became rather apparent that the high number of drops may not be as bad as I thought. Kenny Hill went 37 for 62. 62 passing attempts! The only other game that's even remotely close to that was South Carolina and he went 44 for 60. Arkansas is the third most passing attempts at 41 but his other three games were in the low 20's and 30's.
Based on the law of averages alone, it isn't absurd to think that if you're going to pass the ball that much then your receivers may see double digit drops. With the sole exceptions of the first drive and garbage time in the 4th quarter, our secondary played a huge role in shutting down their passing and we didn't have to sell out to stop the pass like Arkansas did. Our secondary may not be the best in the league, but it certainly isn't close to being one of the worst or even middle of the pack. We are much better back there than what most people give us credit.
With that said, even though I can see the Auburn game going either way, I really believe they play into our strengths more than they do and defensively we're deep and disciplined enough that we don't even have to load up to stop their rushing attack, preventing them from exploiting our secondary. We match up against Auburn pretty well.
