They're ranked #12, which I believe is one down from pre-season. So they're pretty good, or expected to be - finished last year pretty well.
Its basically the same team as last year except Scatterboo and the center. They should be good but everybody knows if we beat them obviously they are not a top 12 team. We are improved but surely not top 10 good. Top 10 in the SEC at best.

Well - if we beat them, they probably won't even be a top 25 team next Tuesday. They might even fire their coach. It's happened several times before.
I suspect their QB will be their leading rusher.

Nah. They are a good team. This isn't a USM situation.
If we win, the storylines will be all about us, not how bad ASU is. And rightfully so. It would be a type of story that the media would sink their teeth into. "Phoenix Rising" type stuff.
I can count on one hand the amount of times a game happens and the other side gets hyped up as really good. If we win it’s almost always “they weren’t that good” and if we lose it’s “look how bad we are” or “look at the dumb decision we made”.
I will be floored if that changes anytime soon. Heck we still have people downplaying some of the success that Jackie and Dan had i.e. “the West sucked when Jackie won it” or “Dan only beat those teams because they were having down years”, that kind of stuff. And sadly it’s not even necessarily wrong. It’s just the glass half empty take that is often prevalent with us.

To be fair, that's usually the case. How many times have we ever beat a team that finished in the top 10?
I was looking for, "Don't do it. I care about you." Hope is dangerous.
And every time we hear it it will be absolutely correct. That being said we almost certainly won't win that game.
They won't immediately trash ASU, but there will definitely be skepticism of whether we have improved that much or ASU has regressed that much. And that's not unfair. We looked looked untalented and poorly coached last year. The portal makes it hard to project from one year to the next, but we didn't go gang busters in the portal and while we didn't look terrible against USM, USM is another terrible team from last year that probably improved but we don't know how much. I think it will be pretty reasonable to take the position that MSU has improved some but ASU has regressed more. Regardless, if we beat ASU (I'm not expecting that), it will mean six wins is on the table, which I think anybody not insane would have gladly taken at the beginning of the season.

If they finish 8-4, I get it. If they make the playoffs, there's no way to downplay it.
Lol. In all seriousness, the media would jump all over it. Especially since Leach would be the start of the story.
But as you know, don't get your hopes up. State athletics will almost always let you down.

There will be some low-level sports commentators and bitter old SPSers downplaying ASU, but they'll only be displaying their 17'd-uppedness..
