If Koennig is gone, who do we replace him with?

I like the idea of Jason Phillips at Houston, Matt Campbell at Toledo and Blake Anderson at USM. Thoughts?

This Dan Mullen seems like a good choice but if he doesn't want job Tony Franklin would be good choice.

I'd love to have one of those up-and-coming OC's that you mentioned, but the key will be 1) how much freedom will they have to under Dan as far as implementing their offense and playcalling duties and 2) will their personality allow them to co-exist with Dan, given his reputation for being very demanding and tough on his assistants at times.

he had Troy rolling there for a while , then went to Auburn and fell apart having to coach Chris 17'in Todd. He seems to be working well with Dykes and it is more of a 'system' type offense that balances run and pass well

has to bring something to the table. I wonder what Koennig really brings. I think the next guy may not call the shots, but he will be a heckuva recruiter and teacher, or you hope he is.

<div>If Koennig didn't know how to run Mullen's offense, and it's useless to mention anyone who doesn't know how to run Mullen's offense, how did Koennig get hired?</div><div>
</div>My point is, how many OCs or potential OCs out there "know how to run Mullen's offense"? If that's a required qualification, I'd think the hiring pool would be severely limited. You make it sound as if Mullen's offense is some kind of esoteric, voodoo, cancer-healing rocket science. It's not. It's football. I'm sure there's many coaches out there with intelligence enough to learn Mullen's offense, especially when taught by Mullen.<div>

Koennig coached with Coach Franchione, who has been using the option based offense for a long time. He did it at TCU and then him and Fran went to Bama and use the spread option offense with Tyler Watts at Bama. He then went to Texas A&M with Fran until they got fired. They ran the spread option.
I agree completely with coach34, Mullen is only going to hire a spread option guy, if anyone. I can't see him getting rid of Koenning though. He has a lot of big time experience and success.

I'm saying talking about people that run a passing type Spread or something like Franklin runs is a waste of time- they are not going to be hired. Mullen is going to only hire someone that can coach QB's and run what he wants run. Mullen wont be hiring anyone to install their system- it will be to become part of his.<div>
</div><div>And as Digdug said- Koenning had been part of Franchione's staff running the Spread option before we hired him. We'll get someone else in that mold- but hopefully younger and a better recruiter</div>
