If we still used the old bowl system and Utah went 12 - 0 in the regular season, 1. What bowl do you think they would have played in, and 2. Do you think they are even in the conversation about National Champs?

I say at best they play in something like the Poinsettia Bowl and never get a shot at Alabam. And in no way are they mentioned as National Champ contenders.

was a BCS and played in a chump conference with a sop schedule. Not saying Utah would have had the chance but you can never tell about these
sports writers.

BYU's 1984 MNC was much less deserved that this one, and I feel confident that Utah would be national champion right now unless they lost their bowl.
I think like the bowls would have tried to set up some kind of good matchup for them (maybe the Fiesta Bowl vs. Oklahoma?), much like the tie-ins were bent this year to allow Boise State to play TCU.
Hell, without the BCS to divide conferences into two tiers, the Mountain West may have secured a good bowl tie-in for its champion anyway (maybe the Fiesta vs. the Big 12 champion)

Clemson played and beat a number one in their bowl. BYU beat a 6-5 Michigan team in the Holiday Bowl.

I think it may have been Barry Switzer who got in a classic remark at a coaches function that offseason. LaVell Edwards was there and Barry was speaking. He looked at Edwards and said that he wanted to congratulate him for doing something only 5 other coaches had done, beat Michigan.
