If you could change one thing about Mississippi State

No. I’m glad I don’t have to share space with those pricks. What a dumb thing to wish for. I don’t want any of what they have. Don’t dilute what we have to bring in that absolute trash
Nail on the head while they keep waving the the old Dixie flags like it’s something to be proud of, what’s ironic is we are the agricultural school but you don’t see us doing that… makes no sense in actuality as my family has a Cotton/Soybeban and wheat in the winter that spans over 13-14 thousand acres of perfectly planted and taken care of so well the MSU extension guys work with us and ask us to plant the test plots for different types of seed and brand. Then hundreds of people come to look at and gather useful intelligence about which s eeed Variety they should be planting based.which type of soil etc they are planting on. This is in northern east MS btw. I just fine it odd that OM folk act like this is way way back in the day like they are done plantation owning better that thou folk.. I apologize but you lit a fire in me. Absolutely agree with your point

I think the coast would’ve been good.
Somewhere more in the center of the state. It would've been not easy, though. You come out with a case for any area. There's even a case made for combining versus two, but I can't see that happening in the past.

I guarantee I’m not the only one who feels this way
State and OM not being 1 school is the worst thing that happened to both schools, athletically. If everyone on both sides wasn't so hard headed way back when we could be enjoying the same type of success our counterparts in other states have been having for the past 100 years. Obviously at this point it's too late to change it, but it would have made our sports history much more enjoyable for sure.

It’s hard to boil this down to one thing. So many decisions beget others. I wish we only had one university with all the resources that would have, but from top to bottom MS has never had a sense of itself, which is the reason we split in the first place. So even if OM/MSU combined, there’s be so much dysfunction that we’d still probably not succeed.

Obviously I harp on location, but even that is dependent on other things. I’d have loved for MSU and the capital to have been in Vicksburg, as I outlined the other day. That’s most ideal (outside of one major program - in which case location matters less).

But if we’re just looking at ONE thing, I’d probably say either locating in Meridian or Tupelo. Both give bigger cities on interstates and strategic access to certain areas.

I would want more cooperation between the university and the city of Starkville. For years the city thought of University was a burden to the town and would not cooperate with initiatives that would support growth of both. That kind of small thinking put us way behind other SEC programs

Go back and allow beer sales in every facility in 1994. And the drinking age on campus is 18. And all of Arizona State and Florida State’s female students decided to transfer that year. And Christy’s, Allgood’s, Woody’s, Mulligans, cabin Burger King, and the bowling alley in the Union never closed. I know you said one thing genie, but just when you think you have the answers, I change the question.
Don’t forget about Flo & Eddie’s.

I’ve never understood how it was even possible for them to think this way. And honestly I doubt they do, deep down, since MSU is literally the only reason Starkville is not any other Anywhere, MS small town with a population under 5K and dying.

I think it’s more just a case of small minded, old school draconian, aww shucks Southern Baptist thinking in general, and selfish motives. Which has always been a big problem at MSU and MS.

I agree. I never understood the line of thinking, but it definitely was the case for a long time, and even still some of it today. I will say that it has gotten better, but we have a lot of ground to make up.

As we all know, hypotheticals must always be based in fact
Well, Desoto and the Coast are kinda bad ideas, to be fair. No offense meant, and I’ll explain.

Desoto is a suburb that is attached to a city in a different state. So this is really self explanatory. It doesn’t rotate around any type of pro-MS politics or issues.

The Coast also has limitations, ie hurricanes, and is located because 2 pretty major cities that are much further ahead and more mature. It’s a decent place to live and work for MS, and it’s got the tourism aspect. But I just don’t think it can LEAD the state in general. Even USM knew not to locate right on the water with no protection.

To sum up, both are great to have and are our most diverse and forward thinking areas. But not great locations for one of the state’s major universities.

Well what are your options? Like I said in an above post, there aren’t that many. I chose DeSoto due to its proximity to a large metropolitan area and a major airport, the coast speaks for itself although I agree the hurricane watch would certainly not be ideal for 2-3 months every year.

This right here.

I know people complain about Meridian but bigger and more continued investment in Meridian early and often would have made things better for the city and county.

Tupelo isn’t a bad option now— but Meridian has long been a transportation hub and had interstates decades before Tupelo.

Jackson Metro - would help the area actually be viable and maybe lessen the brain drain.

Meridian - interstates, direct access to south MS, NOLA and Mobile

Tupelo - same as Meridian, but gives you Birmingham and closer to Nashville/Huntsville.

Basically, MSU would have helped any area grow. But it would help to already have some bones. Starkville was the absolute worst location imaginable. And all those areas have a good airport, that would have grown even more if resources weren’t spread so thin along that whole 45 corridor (Meridian, GT, Tupelo).

I’d 100% be in favor of only having one SEC university in the State of Mississippi from the very beginning. The animosity between State and Ole Miss would have never existed. In state talent would be pooled into one team. It would be a much more cohesive state. I love to hate Ole Miss as much as anybody, but you’ve got to be pretty dense if you can’t comprehend that things would be better for all of us if there was one major university in the state of Mississippi.

If you could change just one thing about Mississippi State what would it be? Mines bigger, but i wish that Ole Miss and State would’ve just been one school. This state is too small for two SEC schools.
They tried that.

The recently deceased Ed Hinton mentioned it in his ‘91 SI article on State and Ole Miss.

I wish we would stop trying to be like other college campus/towns.

Yesterday, in Athens, we drove round and round trying to get parking. My son astutely says, "at the hump, we just park at the stadium". He's 14. Yes, if you're parked on the far back side it's a haul, but to someone who is parking, you already realize you're hoofing it.

I don’t care where State came from or about social classes of 150 years ago. Combining the two schools would’ve given us a powerhouse football program and made this state better.
You do know that they were originally one school, right? It didn't work out, at all. Nobody who wanted to be in the original land grant program wanted to go to Oxford and be looked down on by people who didn't want them there. The program died and had to be restarted elsewhere.

The animosity was there when it WAS one school. The animosity didn't start with the schools.

Geographically, it’s in a perfect location. Just too bad there’s nothing else in that geograph! Whoda thunk it? Lol!

It may have evolved to a better location, but you estimate that getting to Starkville for a long time was hard. You had two lanes, 25, Highway 12, and Highway 25, and various stages of Highway 82. There were no clear and easy paths to the university.

Our biggest problem is having to support and fund three universities, not just two. We also have the lowest population base in the state of the other mid-south states.

I may have been in Texas for the last 20 years, but I remember vividly trying to get to Mississippi State. There were no clear paths from the northern part of the state and no clear paths from the south.

If we had chosen another site, we still have the same problems of having a poor highway system in the state.

Yeah. An agricultural based university on the coast or DeSoto county... makes perfect sense.******
You do realize until about 30 years ago Desoto County was pretty rural with a ton of farming. At one time Desoto County was one of the biggest dairy counties in the state.
