Just go to twitter and click on the trending topic of Dan Mullen. I want to respond to most of them but I am showing restraint.

All I saw were a bunch of beat writers making stale jokes about Starkville.

About Starkville
About Mullen saying we are close to a National Championship
About the Music City Bowl
And on and on and on

Yes, all stale, but I still want to punch some of them in the balls since they are allegedly professional reporters.

but it has to be funny to ANYONE who is not a state fan to hear our coach say we aren't far from a national title when we haven't beaten a West team other than OM and have just now really turned the corner from being one of the worst BCS teams in the country under Jackie (at the end) and under Crooms.

I asked him the billboard question, and yes, there were widespread groans from people in the ballroom when he made the title comment. I didn't really care, I was working on something else.<div>

are the people groaning complete dumbasses? He did not come out and say Mississippi State is close to winning the national championship without any context. He said we weren't that far from winning games against LSU, Alabama, Auburn, and Arkansas. Then he said something along the lines of that means we are close to winning the national championship because if you won those games, it pretty much means you will win the national championship. I took it as a nod to the SEC West and the caliber of teams in it rather than Mississippi State is close to winning a national championship.

not being far off from winning one of those games and not being far off from winning all of them in the same year are two totally different things.

/just sayin

with context it was obvious that he meant it as a nod to the SEC West and not that we were literally going to win a national championship. I think he was just making the point with a hyperbole and people are running with it like chickens with their heads cut off.

but seriously, professional "reporters" shouldn't be posting that crap.

Not to mention, Sloth from the Goonies has no right to talk about anyone....for any reason

most of the other schools dont think State is ever going to beat their school- thats their mindset. Mullen makes them a little nervous and they dont like feeling like that. So they will belittle anything he does.

17'em....we just have to beat Auburn and tell them to shove it up their ***

Instead of reporting, it's easier to take a quick, cheap jab at State and Starkville.

I agree Coach. This is really the best thing that could have happened. All of the MSU players sitting in their dorms just heard their coach say that he thought they could win the national championship. You think that's a confidence boost? Then they hear everyone else laughing at them and that puts a chip on their shoulder. The truth is we can talk about being disrespected till we are blue in the face. However, respect is won at one place and one place only, ands that is the field. But I can guarandamntee you one thing, if we whip Auburns *** on national tv in the second game of the year there won't be much laughing anymore. if we don't there will be.

I think a coach should be positive all the time. This helps recruiting. This statementmight sound funny being Miss State and it might have been funnier if it was Croom saying itbut it was Mullen who has two NC rings and we saw what happen to Florida after he left. I am like many many other in thinking no way is Miss State close but with that said, I don't think Mullen would be saying that if he did not see really good things in the future. He has been around NC teams and knows what that is all about.

with that said. this quote has been completely taken out of context

all he was saying was yes we are close to competing with the bama's lsu's and arkansas's of the world and once you are competitive with them you are close to the National Championship... reports just cut it off to make hits/clicks

He said we were in games against all of those teams until the fourth quarter (he never said in the same year).<div>
<div><div>Every SEC west team not in the state of Mississippi has, in the past 3 years, either been a national championship winner (Auburn/Alabama), national championship caliber (LSU), or a BCS Bowl participant (Arkansas) and Mississippi State has been in a winnable situation against all of them.</div></div><div>
</div><div>Look at it this way:</div><div>
</div><div>2010 National Champion Auburn - three point loss. 4th quarter drive stopped on downs. We held Auburn to fewer points than anyone that year.</div><div>
</div><div>2011 National Champion Alabama - On paper, it's 24-7, but don't forget that TR threw a TD with 12 minutes left and we only down 10. That's doable in the NFL, but in College Football, with the stopped clock on First Down, being down 10 with 12 minutes left is verywinnable, even against Alabama. The other 7 were garbage points with 1:18 left.</div><div>
</div><div>2011 SEC Champ/NC Runner Up LSU - We were tied with them halfway through the third quarter and down only 3 until the fourth quarter. And, I'll drop in 2009, a down year for LSU no doubt, but if Tyler Lee would have given up on being Pocket-Tebowand just pitched the damn ball to Dixon like he was supposed to, we would have won that game.</div><div>
</div><div>2010 Sugar Bowl Invitee Arkansas - Double Overtime loss... fumble into the endzone and inability to convert in second overtime.</div><div>
</div><div>Realistically, if Mississippi State, as Mullen said, starts making plays in the fourth quarter and starts beating the national championship caliber teams in the West, then it's not hard to make the argument that they deserve to be in the national conversation.</div><div>
</div><div>All Mullen said was that they were getting closer to beating National Championship contenders, which means that they're closer to being National Championship contenders. We're in the toughest division in college football, home of the last three national champions and one runner up. At one point last year, we had teamsin our divisionranked 1, 2, and 3, and 2 of those games were winnable until the fourth quarter. A big fourth quarter play here or there could have changed that.</div><div>
</div><div>I don't think it's far off from what Nick Saban said after the end of the 2010 season, when Alabama finished fourth in the SEC West. I can't find the exact quote, but he said something to the effect that the five best teams in the nation were in his division (Auburn, Arkansas, Alabama, LSU, Mississippi State).</div><div>
</div><div>I'm not saying Mississippi State is a top five caliber team now, but if Saban's quote is to be taken seriously, by the same logic, wouldn't a top five team be considered worthy of national championship talk?</div><div>
</div><div>Taken out of context, sure, it sounds ridiculous, but look at the whole quote. It's not the wackadoo smalltown coach idiocy it's made out to be.</div> </div>

you can have your moral victories in your argument all you want. Until we win ONE single game other than OM in the SEC west, it will sound awful no matter the context given. Sure we've come close but this isn't horseshoes or hand grenades. We'd need a season like Arkansas to be in the conversation. Sorry but we haven't sniffed that yet.

I like that Dan says stuff like this because it gets fans from other schools all wound up about it. It had the right affect in that regards. But for me, I won't be drinking the koolaid he is selling by the gallon. I like that his goals are set high but I can at least be realistic in the chances we have to meet them this year or next year. It is not realistic.

I don't think we're in the national championship hunt and I didn't mean to imply that we were.

My only real point is that "We're not far off from a national championship." which is a delusion of grandeur, is different from the full quote which highlights the toughness of our division and frames the NC as an achievable goal.
