Do you really play a rookie next year? Does it depend how far you finish?

I just don't see how you get rid of Darnold. I did not like him as a Jet, but he had gotten much better.

They should and most likely will bring him back. He only cost them $10 million this year. If they couldn't come to terms on a long term deal, the Vikings could franchise tag him.

That will probably be over 40 million for next year. Even though you pay your rookie QB very low it is tough to pay a backup that money.

Unless you tell McCarthy he's not going to be the starter.

A few things to think about.

First, McCarthy had to have a follow-up procedure mid November due to swelling in his knee. He won't be cleared until spring at the earliest. I'm not sure I would be ready to roll the dice that 1) he will be cleared and 2) he's ready to be the starter.

Second, Darnold has led the Vikings to a playoff spot, a potential #1 seed and currently best record in the NFC. While $40 million is a lot of coin, the current other options on the roster are Daniel Jones and Nick Mullens. Yikes. Give me Darnold all day versus those two.

Third, Vikings will have around 77 million in cap space. Jefferson is locked up for a few more years so they can afford to spend that money for one year.

It really comes down to going with the devil you know versus the unknown quantity. Darnold may be a one hit wonder but he's looked damn good for most of this season.

Personally, I would go into next season with Darnold the starter and let McCarthy learn. If Darnold turns out to be a dud, give the reins to McCarthy.

Maybe the Jets are a toxic organization and Darnold never had a chance there. He isn’t the only quarterback who is playing much better now that he is free of the Jets stink. Geno Smith is also playing well for Seattle after leaving the Jets. I wouldn’t hold anything Darnold did or didn’t do in New York against him, because that organization is a clown show.

I think it's funny because the Talking Heads kept saying, he's gonna quit playing so well this week... he's gonna quit playing as well this week.. after I got tired of listening to them say that, I saw that the guy has played lights out the entire year. Good for him.

Long suffering Vikings fan here. I think you try to get Darnold on a similar contract that Mayfield got. Offer between 30-35 million a year. Still allows flexibility.

O’Connell is a qb whisperer and hopefully Darnold understands that’s part of his success, along with a loaded Viking offense.

As a longtime Packers fan, they looked very good today. As long as they are playing at home, they will be tough to beat.

The Jets are so bad, that they’ve pretty much killed Aaron Rodgers’ legacy in just two years. He looks like the worst quarterback in the league, and then he goes on Pat McAfee’s show and makes fun of the owner. I pity the poor quarterback the Jets draft next.

Darnold is only 27 and was a former Top 3 pick for a reason. No way you bail on him yet.
Yeah, easy to forget how young he is. He left for the draft after his redshirt sophomore year. He’s been around the NFL for a while but just entering his prime years

You gotta wonder how many QBs got ruined by being a Jet. That organization has been in shambles since Curtis Martin hung it up.
Jets need to relocate to a city where it's the only show in a regional area. St. Louis really needs a team.

Just shows you how important the right system can be for a qb. If you get picked by the wrong team and it can damage or end your career. Example Chicago Bears.

I think Father Time has done that.

The bear MANAGEMENT is the reason why that happened. I think you'll see more than just a coach replaced in Chicago. They have all the parts but need some OLs in the worst way. The poor kid has 63 sacks in 15 games. I don't know how he is still walking.

As bad as the Bears may appear, they are 18 points away from being 9-7 and contending for a playoff spot. They haven't been terrible so I would agree they have the parts in place. Swift has a chance to rush over 1,000 yards this season and Williams has been pretty good for a rookie. They also play in the best division in football this year. It'll be interesting to see who they hire for head coach.

I don't know if he will, but Pete Carroll once talked about taking over the entire organization.

I think it’s obvious you keep Darnold and let McCarthy get healthy and learn. Pretty easy decision I think.

Guess it depends how you feel about McCarthy. Vikings have some weapons in Jefferson, Addison, Hockensen and Aaron Jones. Their OL has been solid too. A few weeks ago O’Neil (their RT) had allowed the fewest pressures of any starting OL. That sounds like enough pieces to let a rookie QB thrive. Maybe you let Darnold walk and spend the saved $ on defense?

The Vikings are a well run franchise. Seems like a good problem to have.

You trade McCarty for Alvin Kamara (and whatever picks it takes either way) and spend the next two years being serious contenders. Saints don't have enough time to rebuild and win with him before he breaks, so let him go try and get a ring.

Tonight made this Darnold question a little more interesting. This has been old Sam Darnold so far.

The Detroit Lions had a great game plan tonight. Unfortunately, they have had too many injuries on the defensive side, which will show up in the playoffs. The playoffs are hard on your team from a physical standpoint.

I don't know what was wrong with the Vikings. Every pattern they ran was way down the field. Nobody ran any hot routes at all.

McCarthy would likely be low first/high second round value. I'm guessing Kamara would be a 4th round value? So the Saints would have to throw in several more pieces or picks?
